RJ Mitte, who played Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad and championed disability rights, died Monday in Brownsville, Texas, his representatives said.

The Announcement: A Star of Breaking Bad Is Gone at 34

RJ Mitte, best known as Walter 'Flynn' White Jr. on AMC's Breaking Bad, died Monday at 34, his representatives confirmed to Deadline, NBC News, Variety and other outlets.

The representatives said in a statement that it was 'with profound sadness' they shared 'the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte.' According to Deadline, he died in Brownsville, Texas, and no cause of death was immediately given.

Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa declared him dead at about 1:30 p.m. local time and said an autopsy would be performed, Deadline reported; NBC News reported Hinojosa could not disclose the cause.

Why the News Lands So Hard

Mitte was a teenager when he joined what BBC describes as one of the most acclaimed US series of the 21st century, and many fans came to see Walt Jr. as the heart and conscience of the show, per the Los Angeles Times.

Because his character also had cerebral palsy, his performance was unusually personal, and the role made him a public face for disability awareness.

The shock is amplified by timing: only on September 30, Deadline reports, he walked a red carpet at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills for his indie drama Talking to Strangers, and Variety notes he was actively promoting new work days before his death.

Conflicting Accounts of How He Died

Officially, no cause of death has been disclosed. NBC News and Deadline say the justice of the peace could not reveal or did not give a cause, and an autopsy was expected, per Deadline.

Given these divergent accounts, the only established facts at this hour are the day, the location, and the confirmation by his representatives, with official findings still pending.

From Breakout Role to Built-In Authenticity

Born August 21, 1992 in Jackson, Mississippi, and diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 3, Mitte told VICE in a 2016 interview that he started acting 'to meet kids my own age' after moving to Los Angeles, NBC News reports.

On the Joe Vulpis Podcast this month, he explained that Walt Jr. was based on a real friend of creator Vince Gilligan who had cerebral palsy, The Hollywood Reporter says.

The show ran five seasons, 2008 to 2013, earning 58 Emmy nominations and 16 wins including two for Outstanding Drama Series, per Deadline and BBC, and the cast won the SAG ensemble award in 2014.

An Advocate Who Redefined Representation

Mitte's representatives told Fox News Digital that drawing on his own experience with cerebral palsy, he 'brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion,' serving as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's and as president of The Mitte Foundation.

BBC reports he pushed for more varied, complex roles for performers with disabilities, telling the outlet in 2021 that 'breakthroughs sometimes come in pieces and moments instead of larger change.'

His 2021 film Triumph, about a teen wrestler with cerebral palsy, won a Ruderman Family Foundation Seal of Authentic Representation, NBC News notes.

What Comes Next, and What Remains Unknown

Details on survivors and any memorial service were not immediately available, Deadline says, with representatives asking for privacy for the family.

The Hollywood Reporter lists survivors including his sister, his mother and his grandmother Anita, and reports that in October 2025 Mitte got engaged to longtime partner Kennedy Suarez.

His most recent work — Talking to Strangers and the TIFF-premiering thriller Cassi, per The Hollywood Reporter — will now reach audiences as a final chapter.

As the autopsy proceeds, what officials confirm will shape the record on how he died; what already stands is a career that turned a teen role into a platform.
