Hazelwood Announces 'Love Hypothesis' Sequel 'The Two-Body Problem'

Ali Hazelwood announced on Instagram Tuesday that she has written a sequel to her 2021 mega-bestselling STEMinist romance 'The Love Hypothesis,' titled 'The Two-Body Problem' — an obvious riff, as Book Riot notes, on Liu Cixin's 'The Three-Body Problem.' The new book will be published on February 2, 2027, a date corroborated by Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and People via Yahoo. Hazelwood shared the cover, drawn by Lilly Saur in the same style as the original, showing the main characters with their arms around each other as they look out at an experiment.

A sequel was never part of the plan. Hazelwood wrote that "'I wrote a sequel to The Love Hypothesis' is not a sentence I thought I'd say a year or so ago, but now I weirdly can't imagine a world in which The Two-Body Problem doesn't exist." According to Collider, what changed was the movie: working on the Prime Video adaptation helped her fall for Adam and Olive all over again. She also acknowledged that unannounced sequels can be blindsiding for fans, telling readers they are free to skip the book and overwrite it with whatever headcanon they prefer.

Per the synopsis quoted by People, the book follows Olive as she navigates clashing schedules, an increasingly grim and ultra-competitive academic job market, and her desire to be seen as a formidable scientist in her own right, all while being in love with fellow researcher Dr. Adam Carlsen. Hazelwood teased that the story "spans a couple of years, and it's a mix of slice of life, postdoctoral turmoil, and unflinching exploration of the hardest challenge one will face in a long-term relationship: deciding what to have for dinner." Collider reports it returns to the couple several years into their relationship rather than recreating the fake-dating setup.

The book-to-screen machine is already running. Multiple outlets, including Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, confirm that MRC is developing a film based on 'The Two-Body Problem' for Amazon MGM Studios, though Hazelwood cautioned that "nothing is guaranteed" and no further details were shared. It follows the 'Love Hypothesis' film, which premiered September 23 on Prime Video, directed by Claire Scanlon and produced by Elizabeth Cantillon, starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. People reports the film quickly became the No. 1 most-watched movie on the platform worldwide.

This is a notable moment for romance publishing, which historically saw sequels and screen pipelines reserved for fantasy epics. Since 2021, 'The Love Hypothesis' — famously born as Star Wars Reylo fan fiction, per The Hollywood Reporter — became a New York Times bestseller and a BookTok obsession, and Hazelwood's books have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
