Mistral Hits €21 Billion Valuation in Samsung-Led €3B Round

French AI startup Mistral raised €3 billion led by Samsung at a €21 billion valuation, becoming Europe's second-highest-valued private tech company.

What happened: Europe's largest private tech round

Mistral announced on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that it raised €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in fresh equity funding at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion ($24 billion). The round was jointly led by existing investor PSG Equity alongside first-time investors Samsung Electronics and the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund, which is managed by EQT and counts the European Commission, Novo Holdings and Santander among its backers. According to Reuters, Mistral's CFO Johan Bergqvist called it the biggest equity funding round by a privately owned European technology firm, making Mistral Europe's second-highest-valued private tech group and its fastest-growing company. A year ago, Mistral was valued at €11.7 billion in a round led by ASML.

Why it's surprising: a David among US giants

The valuation surge is striking given the scale gap with Mistral's rivals. Yet Mistral, just three years old, is positioning itself as Europe's champion for "sovereign AI," a push sharpened by a June US decision to limit foreign access to two advanced Anthropic models. "We have seen in the past that there is politics involved in the access of these solutions," Bergqvist told Reuters. CEO Arthur Mensch told CNBC the company aims to grow its own compute capacity by around 100% over the next five years and train "bigger and faster models."

The evidence: revenue, customers and strategy

Both outlets report Mistral is on track to exceed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of the year, and Mensch told CNBC he expects to beat that figure given current trends, while declining to give a revised number. Mistral develops open-weight models that more than 125 customers can download and customize on their own servers, and it builds custom enterprise integrations — including AI embedded in ASML's manufacturing process, with a similar focus planned for Samsung. CFO Bergqvist told Reuters growth is particularly strong in Asia and North America. Microsoft, which agreed in July to spend billions on Mistral's European computing infrastructure, did not participate in the round.

Stakes and what comes next

Mistral faces intense competition from highly capable Chinese open-source labs, but Mensch told CNBC they are not working with enterprise customers outside China and said Mistral's upcoming releases will be "very competitive." He argued customers need a trusted partner that can certify they will get better models a year from now. Funds will go toward building Mistral's own data centers and frontier research. Bergqvist told Reuters an IPO is "always of course an optionality" but that there are no ongoing discussions and timing is "still up in the air." The round's acceleration, Mensch said, also enables further growth into 2027.
