Disney+ and Hulu have ordered Ryan Murphy's 'Glee' reboot to series, with Lea Michele in talks to return as Rachel Berry.

The reboot is officially a go

Deadline reports that 'Glee' is officially coming back after Disney+ and Hulu handed the reboot a series order, with 20th Television — the studio behind the original — producing.

The revival was announced Wednesday via the show's official social accounts, which posted 'Currently gleeking out!' alongside the famous 'L' hand gesture, per Billboard.

The original musical comedy ran for six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015, following the New Directions show choir at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. No casting or premiere date was announced with the order, though all 121 original episodes currently stream on Hulu.

Why the greenlight caught attention

The order is surprising mainly because Ryan Murphy had spent months framing it as a maybe rather than a plan. Deadline notes Murphy, promoting his FX series 'The Shards,' said in July only that the show had 'come back around' and 'maybe we should revisit that show.'

Going from speculative musings to a formal series order in under two months marks a rapid turnaround.

Lea Michele rumored to return

No casting was part of the series order, but Variety reports it confirmed through multiple sources that Lea Michele is set to reprise Rachel Berry, though representatives for Michele and Murphy declined to comment.

Deadline separately reported the next day that Michele is in talks for the role, while noting Matthew Morrison is not in talks yet but is hopeful to join.

Heather Morris and Chord Overstreet posted on social media implying their returns, with Morris writing that Brittany S. Pierce is 'alive and well… And back for more,' according to Playbill.

Chris Colfer told Bustle a reboot would be hard 'now that Naya is gone,' but joked fans would come after him 'with pitchforks and jazz hands' if he said no.

A heavyweight legacy on screen and charts

Billboard points out the cast once placed more than 200 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, more Hot 100 hits than any other act at the time, a mark only Drake, Taylor Swift and Future have surpassed.

BBC notes the cast even overtook The Beatles as the non-solo act with the most Billboard Hot 100 appearances, and that covers like 'Don't Stop Believin'' introduced older hits to new audiences. Disney said the show still draws around 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, per Deadline.

Stakes: music discovery and a heavy history

That Eric Alper argues the reboot is great news for the music industry, citing the original's power as a discovery engine: the cast's 'Don't Stop Believin'' hit No. 4 on the Hot 100, Journey saw an 87% sales jump, and Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 11 after a 1,951% weekly sales increase following a 2011 tribute episode.

But the revival also carries emotional weight. BBC and Billboard both note the deaths of Cory Monteith in 2013 and Naya Rivera in 2020, and Mark Salling's 2018 death, which Colfer says makes returning difficult.

Jane Lynch told the Guardian in 2022, cited by Variety, that Sue Sylvester 'would be MAGA' today — a subplot fans are already speculating about.

What comes next for the New Directions

Details remain sparse: Deadline, BBC and Billboard all note no casting, storylines or premiere date were confirmed with the order, and Murphy has said none of the original cast has read his script yet.

Variety sketches the fan speculation anyway — possible premises include a 10-year McKinley reunion, Mr. Schue's retirement, or even Beth, Quinn and Puck's daughter, now about 16.

Reportedly per Variety, Heather Morris and Chord Overstreet hinted they are back, while Kevin McHale has told People 'I could never say no to that.' As Max George, who appeared in season six, told BBC Scotland: it has been over 10 years, so he is 'expecting big things' from Murphy.
