Josh Hartnett's six-episode sea-creature thriller 'Below' hit No. 1 on Netflix just one day after its October 8 release.
An Instant Chart-Topper on a Shark-Tired Format
Polygon reports that *Below*, a live-action supernatural thriller, debuted on Netflix on Thursday, October 8 and became a runaway hit almost immediately, topping the platform's most-streamed TV chart within a single day.
According to Polygon, the series — pitched as a *Jaws*-meets-John-Carpenter story — sits above *East of Eden*, *Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story*, and the Netflix debut of Disney+'s *Percy Jackson and the Olympians*.
A fisherman defending his coastal town from a mysterious sea creature may sound familiar, but Polygon suggests the show could be creating a new fear of open water for a generation raised on Spielberg's shark.
Why the Speed Is Surprising
The surprise is the timeframe: one day to the top of the service's TV chart, beating prestige literary adaptations and established franchises.
Polygon adds a caveat worth keeping in mind — Netflix updates its official streaming charts on a weekly basis, so *Below*'s true performance figures will not be public for a few days, though the outlet deems it a safe assumption the show will top the official charts too.
For a six-episode limited series with no sequel-bait ending, an instant No.
Who Made It — and Why It Ends on Its Own Terms
Polygon notes the six-episode series was created by Jesse McKeown, whose credits include episodes of *The Sinner* and *The Umbrella Academy*.
Josh Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney and executive produces, alongside Mackenzie Davis as Dr. Fonda Howander, with Charlie Heaton, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Natasha Henstridge rounding out the ensemble.
Despite the early streaming success, a second season may not be coming: Polygon quotes McKeown explaining that "this is a limited series" — he wanted a complete, satisfying story that doesn't leave things dangling, though he and executive producer Jessica Rhoades don't like a neat ending either.
Another Ex-YouTube Original Finds a Netflix Home
*Below*'s rise lands during a busy Netflix moment for shows with YouTube roots. What's on Netflix reports that *Wayne*, the canceled YouTube Premium action-comedy, began streaming on Netflix in the United States on October 12, its third home since premiering in January 2019.
The outlet draws the obvious comparison: *Cobra Kai* made the same jump and became one of Netflix's biggest hits of the decade, and *Wayne* ends its only season on a brutal cliffhanger with creator Shawn Simmons saying the story is mapped out — so an audience surge could revive talk of season 2, just as it did for *Cobra Kai*.
The Pipeline Keeps Moving
With *Below* topping the chart and *Wayne* newly arrived, Netflix's schedule shows no sign of slowing.
The Playlist reports that *The Body*, a gritty, campy Catholic-school thriller from creator and co-director Quinn Shephard — the Emmy-nominated writer-director of *Under the Bridge* — debuts on Netflix on November 11, with a trailer casting it as an ode to the 2000s and a large cast including Kristina Bogic, Nnamdi Asomugha, Shirley Chen and Sofia Wylie.
For subscribers, the next month stacks a chart-topping miniseries, a cult revival and a new thriller on the same service.
