Roger Goodell Signs Fifth Extension Through 2030 Season

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell signed a performance-heavy four-year extension through the 2030 season, expiring March 31, 2031.

The league's Compensation Committee notified full ownership on Sunday that an agreement had been reached on a four-year extension. According to a memo sent by committee chairman Robert Kraft and obtained by ESPN and NFL Network, the deal is 'heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger's and the NFL's performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee.' Kraft wrote, 'We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.'

This is Goodell's fifth extension — he previously re-signed in 2009, 2012, 2017 and 2023. Ahead of the 2023 re-up, he declined to engage with speculation that 2027 would be his final year, and few obvious successors were in play, giving him leverage. The timing is also striking: the announcement came three days before the start of his 21st season, in the otherwise quiet midpoint of Labor Day weekend.

Goodell, 67, succeeded Paul Tagliabue as commissioner in 2006, beginning his NFL career as an administrative intern in 1982 under Pete Rozelle. Under his tenure the league has grown dramatically: the Washington Commanders sold for $6.05 billion in 2023 and the Seattle Seahawks sold for $9.612 billion this offseason, a record, according to the Associated Press. The league is playing a record nine international games this season, and flag football will debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The extension's expiration date is the story. It matches the end of the current collective bargaining agreement, which also runs out in March 2031, and covers upcoming broadcasting negotiations and the potential move to an 18-game season. At the end of this deal Goodell will be 72 and will have served 24 seasons as commissioner — second-longest tenure behind Pete Rozelle, per NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.
