VMAs Ratings Hit 8.4 Million, Best Audience Since 2015

Nielsen fast nationals show the 2026 MTV VMAs drew 8.43 million viewers on CBS and MTV, up 51% from last year and the biggest audience since 2015.
A ratings surge nobody scheduled
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards averaged a combined 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV on Sunday night, according to Nielsen Live+same-day fast nationals reported by Variety and TheWrap. That is up 51% from the 2025 show, which drew 5.60 million across the same network lineup, and it makes this year's telecast the most-watched VMAs since 2015, when the show reached 12.73 million viewers on MTV alone. The numbers include the CBS telecast, MTV's simulcast and an MTV encore.
Madonna's return peaked at 15 million
TheWrap reports viewership peaked at over 15 million viewers during the opening act, which featured Madonna performing at the VMAs for the first time in 23 years alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. The opening set as described by Yahoo Entertainment was cameo-crammed, with multiple dancers smoking onstage and Seth Rogen lighting up during Madonna's performance. Madonna's comeback also dominated the awards themselves: Business Insider reports she won seven awards at the show, including artist of the year, and Yahoo's style desk saw the red carpet fill with lace, crosses and Material Girl-style looks in her honor.
Demos and social numbers pile up
The demo gains were across the board. Variety reports the show was the most-watched VMAs in adults 25-54 since 2019 (3.11 million, up 34%) and in adults 18-49 since 2018 (2.66 million, up 32%), with adults 18-34 at their best since 2020 and up 46%. Adweek characterizes the 25-54 figure as 3.55 million, a discrepancy between the two outlets' reads of the same Nielsen data. On social, CBS reported 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views, up 8% from last year, and TheWrap notes the show ranked as the day's most social program and No. 1 on X worldwide, trending in 10 countries.
Football chaos and a Swift-sized night
The telecast was briefly hijacked by the NFL: a Baltimore Ravens–Dallas Cowboys overrun on CBS delayed the start to 7:51 p.m. ET, and Yahoo Entertainment notes viewers missed roughly the first 20 minutes of the show live, including Madonna's opener, before Dallas lost 34-31 in overtime.
Why the stakes are high for CBS
The rebound matters because the VMAs had already been revived once: TheWrap notes last year's six-year high came when the show simulcast on CBS for the first time, and 2026 broke that record. Adweek frames the audience as a win for brands too, with Paramount Media Labs producing 116 bespoke branded content assets, eight minutes of branded integration, and 20 new advertisers this cycle, including sponsors Bacardi, Under Armour, The General, Spotify and Credit Karma. Snoop Dogg hosted from LA Live's Peacock Theater.
What comes next
Variety cautions the fast national numbers are subject to change once finals are in, so the final tally could still move. The immediate afterlife of the show, per the pack, is a wave of searches for Madonna's age, Swift's 'Patient Zero' video, and performer Sienna Spiro, plus fashion post-mortems from outlets ranking the best and worst looks.
