Nine companies including Broadcom, Verizon and UnitedHealth formally objected to tokenized trading of their shares on OKXICE's proposed 24/7 platform.

What happened: nine issuers file formal objections

OKXICE, the Texas-based joint venture owned equally by Intercontinental Exchange and OKC USA Holding, disclosed on October 15 that nine U.S.-listed companies had submitted formal objections to having their shares tokenized on its planned Tokenized Securities Venue.

The objectors are Cerebras Systems, AppLovin, Applied Digital, Rocket Lab, CoreWeave, Verizon Communications, Applied Optoelectronics, Broadcom and UnitedHealth Group.

Under the SEC's framework, a written objection within the permitted window prevents the venue from offering the affected tokenized stock, making these filings a practical block rather than a symbolic gesture.

Why it is surprising: issuer consent bites

The surprise is that the companies behind the shares themselves — not regulators — are the obstacle. OKXICE's original October 4 proposal covered 63 securities, and eight of the nine objectors sat on that list; Cerebras had already objected outside it.

According to Koin Bülteni, the previously announced plan to offer 63 U.S. stocks was scaled back, though the platform still intends to launch with dozens of names including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla, JPMorgan Chase and Walmart.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news, as noted by Bitcoin News.

The SEC mechanism behind the block

The SEC's September 17 temporary exemption lets qualifying venues offer tokenized U.S. stocks through automated market makers, but requires a venue to notify a company before offering tokenized shares created by an unaffiliated third party and to wait at least 30 calendar days.

A written objection in that window keeps the stock off the specific venue that sent notice; it does not bar tokenization elsewhere, and the operator must disclose the objection publicly within five business days.

Objections accumulated across successive disclosures: Cerebras on October 4, AppLovin, Applied Digital and Rocket Lab by October 8, and five more by October 15.

Why companies are pushing back

The notice does not explain each company's reasoning. According to Barron's reporting cited by Crypto News, the objections followed concerns about stock prices, market liquidity and investor understanding of tokenized shares.

Applied Optoelectronics reportedly raised questions about potential price volatility and whether investors might mistakenly believe the company supported the tokens, and Koin Bülteni reports the company told The Wall Street Journal it was unsure of tokenization's effects on its share price, liquidity and volatility.

The filings do not establish that the objectors oppose tokenization generally.

The stakes for 24/7 blockchain equities

OKXICE's model would trade tokenized securities against stablecoins including USDC, USDG and USDT, using permissioned Uniswap v4 liquidity pools on XLayer rather than an order book, with a registered broker-dealer holding one underlying share per token.

Under the exemption, Tier 1 venues may offer up to 75 symbols with trading capped at 0.25% of the underlying stock's average daily volume.

Koin Bülteni reports the total value of tokenized stocks reached about $3.5 billion as of October 15, up from roughly $680 million at the start of the year — a market whose shape issuer objections can now visibly alter.

What comes next

OKXICE has not announced a confirmed public trading launch date, and its October 15 filing states the venture has not registered with the SEC for the covered activities, with the regulator not passing on the merits of its disclosures.

Trading halts on primary exchanges must pause tokenized trading, and a second breach of a volume ceiling triggers a three-month suspension for an affected security.

Koin Bülteni also notes Nasdaq said separately it would not tokenize its own shares under the framework while emphasizing continued commitment to tokenization. The exemptions expire September 17, 2031 unless the SEC revises them.
