Nicholas Hytner restages Alan Bennett's Tony-winning 'The History Boys' at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2027, its first West End run in 20 years.
A Tony-Winning Classic Returns After Two Decades
Nicholas Hytner will revive Alan Bennett's *The History Boys* at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket, the play's first West End appearance in 20 years, per Variety and Playbill. The 16-week engagement runs from previews on April 10, 2027 through July 24, 2027, with opening night set for April 19.
Casting will be announced in January 2027.
Why the Revival Turns Heads
What makes this return remarkable is the completeness of the reunion: director, designer, playwright and even the producing team are back. The Independent notes the West End last hosted the play from December 2007 to April 2008, so two decades have passed since London audiences saw it.
The original production made stars of James Corden, Russell Tovey, Dominic Cooper, Jamie Parker and Samuel Barnett, all of whom appeared in the 2006 film adaptation.
Reviving a landmark staging with its original director — rather than a fresh interpretation — is a rarity, and Hytner calls it 'a delight to be back in the theater with him again.'
The Play's Award-Laden Pedigree
The play premiered at the National Theatre in 2004 before transferring to the West End and Broadway, where it collected three Olivier Awards and six Tony Awards, including Best Play on Broadway in 2006.
British Theatre details that Richard Griffiths won Best Leading Actor, Frances de la Tour won Best Featured Actress, and Hytner took Best Direction, with designer Bob Crowley and lighting designer Mark Henderson also honored.
Set in 1980s Britain, the comedy follows eight Sheffield grammar schoolboys navigating adolescence, sexuality and their teachers' battle over what education — and history itself — is for.
A Timely Argument About Education
The Jewish Chronicle reports that Hytner sees fresh urgency in the play's themes as a generation grows up with social media and artificial intelligence.
He argues that much of what state education focused on over the last 20 years 'is proving to be beside the point, when AI can do so much of what pupils were being prepared to do,' and warns of a 'terminal decline' of music, drama, history and modern languages in state schools.
The revival also lands amid the government's first major curriculum and GCSE revision in over a decade, expected in spring 2027.
Producers and Access Tickets
Variety reports the revival is produced by Hytner with Brian and Dayna Lee of AF Creative Media, whose Broadway credits include the Tony winners 'Company,' 'Moulin Rouge!
The Musical' and 'Angels in America,' alongside Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment, with Mark Rubinstein as executive producer. The Lees call the original staging 'an era-defining moment in contemporary British theatre.'
For audiences, British Theatre notes that general sale opens at 9am on Friday, October 23, with 20,000 tickets priced at £25 available across the run — a notable accessibility push for a marquee revival.
What Comes Next
Bennett, quoted across the pack, calls *The History Boys* 'one of the happiest plays I've written' and notes it was the quickest he set down, taking far less than his usual five years.
The next milestone is January 2027, when the new cast will be revealed, followed by first previews on April 10 and opening night on April 19. London Theatre directs theatergoers to thehistoryboysplay.com for details.
Whether the reworked staging can charm a new generation — as the original enthralled 'audiences on both sides of the Atlantic,' as the Lees put it — will be the story to watch through summer 2027.
