New reporting names the bystander and suspect in the Bend school shooting as flowers, candles and vigils turn Silver Rail's grounds into a public memorial.
A name for the bystander, a name for the suspect
NBC News reports that Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter with two daughters at the school, was the bystander who pursued the gunman inside; his brother Kyle identified him, and CBS News reports Giamanco came forward on Friday to identify himself.
Multiple sources in the pack report investigators have identified the shooter as John J. Griffin, 16, of Bend. Police Chief Mike Krantz has not publicly confirmed either name, so the reporting remains attribution-based.
The visual story: a school sign turned shrine
Associated Press photographs carried by Yahoo News show flowers placed beside the Silver Rail Elementary sign and police tape, while images filed by The Source's Peter Madsen show parents, teachers and children huddled outside the school in the hours after the shooting.
This is how public mourning typically takes visual form — a spontaneous memorial accumulating objects at the site of loss. Oregon Public Broadcasting's coverage of Drake Park echoes the same imagery: candles, flowers and stuffed toys.
Why the identity reveal changes the narrative
When the story first ran as 'police say a bystander may have stopped the shooter,' the intervenor was anonymous.
Naming Giamanco adds a human ledger to the event: NBC News reports he holds a concealed-weapon permit, was driving home from lunch when he heard gunfire, and that, per his brother, he now feels guilty he could not save more children and does not want to speak.
CBS News also identifies the 5-year-old victim as Rhoam Summer through fundraisers and a post from his father — a detail officials themselves have not released.
What the reporting says about the gun
The weapon is a recurring thread across outlets. CBS News and the Associated Press, cited by Yahoo, report the same mother-purchased shotgun.
Police themselves have not said what type of weapon was used or how many rounds were fired, so all weapon details in this story are sourced, not official.
Inside the room the shooter entered
NBC News reports, quoting Kyle Giamanco and several parents, that the shooting occurred in a special education room — a detail echoed by The Source's on-the-ground reporting that witnesses heard at least three additional shots in that area of the school.
The slain teacher and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed there, and a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized with critical injuries.
The shooter's mother, in an interview with CNN, said 'he was a good boy,' denied warning signs, and apologized to the victims' families.
What comes next for the investigation and the community
Authorities searched the shooter's home looking for a motive, CNN reports, and ATF agents from Eugene and Portland self-initiated a response and are tracing the firearm, per the agency's Seattle spokesperson. CNN says a 5 p.m.
ET news conference was planned for further updates, and Krantz warned, 'This is going to be a long investigation.'
