With Jalen Hurts ruled out by a moving blood clot, Tanner McKee makes the first meaningful start of his NFL career Sunday against the Panthers.

Hurts ruled out with a superficial blood clot

The Philadelphia Eagles enter Week 6 at 2-3, hoping to avoid a fourth straight loss after opening the season 2-0, and now must do it without quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Yahoo Sports reports Hurts originally suffered a calf injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, and an ultrasound later revealed a superficial blood clot.

He was cleared to play in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, but a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday showed movement in the clot, and the Eagles released a statement ruling him out against the Panthers. Hurts is expected to remain sidelined until the situation is resolved.

McKee's first snap that actually counts

NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk reports that Tanner McKee is set to start Sunday against the Panthers after Hurts was ruled out, and that it will be the first meaningful start of McKee's NFL career.

His only two prior starts came in Week 18 the last two years, when the Eagles had already clinched their playoff seeds and rested Hurts and other top players — he has never played a snap outside garbage time in a meaningful regular-season game.

The only other quarterback on the roster is Cole Payton, a fifth-round rookie who NBC Sports notes started just one season at North Dakota State and is not viewed as ready to lead an NFL team right away.

The in-house option and the veteran they just cut

Per Yahoo Sports, the simplest option is staying in-house: McKee, drafted in the sixth round in 2023, has appeared in six games with two starts, completing 61.4% of his passes for 597 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, and his familiarity with the personnel gives him an edge over any outside option.

The complication is timing: according to NBC Sports, the Eagles had a very experienced backup in Andy Dalton but cut him last week before Hurts was diagnosed with the blood clot.

Yahoo Sports adds that Philadelphia acquired Dalton from the Panthers in March for a seventh-round pick, that he threw one interception on his only pass attempt this season, and that Mike Garafolo reported multiple teams checked in on Dalton after his Oct.

9 release, with Philadelphia a potential landing spot.

The surprising wildcard and what comes next

The consensus-breaking twist comes from Yahoo Sports, which floats a reunion with Carson Wentz as the most intriguing option if Hurts misses an extended stretch.

Wentz spent his first five seasons in Philadelphia after being selected second overall in 2016, finished third in MVP voting in 2017 before a torn ACL, and his tenure ended sourly after the 2020 season — but enough time has passed that a call makes sense, especially after he played well for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 when Kyler Murray went down.

Yahoo Sports suggests calling the Vikings to acquire Wentz may be worth Philadelphia's time. For now, though, Sunday against Carolina belongs to McKee, and we'll find out then whether he's ready.
