Shyamalan Surprises Beyond Fest With Early 'Remain' Screening
By @sharedot · · 6 pages
M. Night Shyamalan stunned Beyond Fest by swapping in a secret screening of 'Remain' months before its February release, and first reactions are positive.
A Sixth Sense night that turned into a premiere
According to Yahoo Entertainment's Gold Derby, guests at a Beyond Fest retrospective screening of 'The Sixth Sense' on Tuesday got an impromptu surprise: M. Night Shyamalan appeared in person and announced he would instead show his upcoming Warner Bros. thriller 'Remain.' The film was not slated to reach theaters until February 5, 2027, making the unannounced showing a genuine first look — and early social media reactions from attendees are reportedly rolling in, with the outlet noting viewers are calling it a 'romantic throwback.'
What 'Remain' is actually about
Gold Derby's rundown describes the story as centering on reclusive architect Tate Gordon, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who moves to a small coastal town to finish his latest project and meets an alluring young woman, played by Phoebe Dynevor, who draws him into a deadly mystery hanging over the community. The cast also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, and Jay O. Sanders. The first trailer, released September 8, opens on an idyllic romance of game nights and longing stares before the tone turns sinister — classic Shyamalan misdirection.
A Sparks collaboration and a storied crew
The film is based on a story conceived by Shyamalan and best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks, who executive produces while Shyamalan directs from his own screenplay. Gold Derby lists a below-the-line team that includes composer James Newton Howard, director of photography Adolpho Veloso, and editor Noëmi Preiswerk, with producers Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Theresa Park alongside the director. Warner Bros. will release it in North America on February 5, 2027, and internationally beginning February 3.
Why the timing matters for thrillers
Gold Derby assesses 'Remain' as a 'straight box-office play' rather than an awards contender, noting it has been 26 years since 'The Sixth Sense' contended for Oscars and that none of the 11 films previously adapted from Sparks novels earned a nomination. Its romantic-thriller blend is also circulating on television: Channel 4's press office says the six-part Welsh series 'The Night They Vanished,' adapted from Vanessa Savage's novel, 'weaves together dark secrets, a love story laced with menace, and a chilling countdown,' with filming underway in Wales. The surprise screening gives Shyamalan an early word-of-mouth edge in a crowded field.
