CBS Sports made J.J. Watt its full-time lead NFL game analyst on a multiyear deal, permanently replacing Tony Romo after his July OWI arrest.
CBS Makes It Official
CBS Sports confirmed Thursday that J.J. Watt is the network's new lead NFL game analyst, signing the former star pass rusher to a multiyear agreement whose financial details were not disclosed.
Watt, who had been filling the top seat on an interim basis this season, will call games alongside veteran play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson through at least the next season's Super Bowl.
The move permanently settles a broadcasting chair that had been in flux since the summer.
Why the Move Was Forced
Romo, CBS' lead NFL analyst since 2017, was arrested after a July 23 traffic stop in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. He was quickly placed on leave, pleaded no contest on September 1, and had his driving privileges revoked for six months.
With his status unresolved as the season approached, CBS elevated Watt to the No. 1 booth, and the network officially parted ways with Romo in early October, ending his 10-year stint.
A Fast Rise From Studio Desk to Top Booth
Watt's broadcasting climb has been remarkably quick.
He retired after the 2022 season following a 12-year playing career with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals, joined CBS in 2023 as a studio analyst on 'The NFL Today,' moved to game commentary last season in the network's No. 2 booth with Ian Eagle, and reached the top team earlier this year after Romo went on leave.
According to the New York Post, Romo had $72 million left on his contract, which was settled to let CBS move forward with Watt.
The Evidence: Praise and Preparation
CBS leadership framed the decision as earned rather than convenient. Chairman David Berson said Watt is 'insightful, entertaining, passionate, meticulous in his preparation, and the ultimate teammate,' with 'a unique ability to see things and communicate to fans of all levels.'
Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, responded that he was 'incredibly honored and grateful,' thanking Berson for his 'leadership, vision and trust' and looking ahead to 'many more Sundays' with Nantz and Wolfson.
Watt is known in the industry for the intense preparation that defined his playing days.
The Stakes for CBS's NFL Coverage
The New York Post reports that Troy Aikman is in a contract dispute with ESPN that has fueled speculation about 'Monday Night Football,' with candidates like Greg Olsen floated elsewhere — meaning one of the industry's top analysts is now locked in at CBS.
Watt will be in the booth when CBS carries Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta in February 2028, giving the network a new voice for its marquee showcase.
What Comes Next
Watt and Nantz return to work immediately, with Nantz listed as probable for Sunday's game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.
The pair had a lighter moment during last week's Bills-Raiders broadcast when Nantz tried to demonstrate the 'Peanut Punch' on Watt's football, smacked his own wrist, and joked at halftime that he had broken it — he later confirmed nothing was broken.
