SNL UK's Ania Magliano called Shane Gillis a c-word live on Weekend Update, a jab NBC's rules would never allow the American show to air.

What SNL UK Actually Said

During this week's Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live UK, cast member Ania Magliano used a story about women being given cycling shorts to protect them from upskirting as a setup, then pivoted to Shane Gillis's episode.

As a photo of Gillis delivering his monologue appeared on screen, LateNighter reports, she deadpanned: "Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being up-skirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse."

She then added, "Last week on SNL, comedian Shane Gillis also caused controversy by dropping the F-bomb. Oh, Shane, you're not allowed to say that, you stupid f*cking c*nt." Bleeding Cool notes the line aired live and uncensored, as intended.

Why It Landed: British TV's Looser Rules

The digs went out raw because SNL UK simply can.

The American SNL, by contrast, airs on NBC, whose standards and practices prohibit foul language, and its coast-to-coast broadcast begins at 8:30 p.m. on the West Coast, where FCC restrictions on indecent and profane broadcast content still apply, airing on a slight delay.

The censorship gap is precisely what made the joke possible — and funny.

The Clip That Started It

The exchange is playing out on video as much as in print, and LateNighter posted Magliano's full Weekend Update bit on Gillis at the top of its report, with Bleeding Cool screencapping the segment from SNL UK on Sky.

Watching it matters because the punchline's power depends entirely on delivery — a setup about upskirting-protection shorts that swerves into an uncensored insult only SNL UK could broadcast.

It also arrived alongside James Austin Johnson reprising his Donald Trump in the show's cold open, per Bleeding Cool.

The Backlash Gillis Built

Both outlets trace Magliano's setup to the source of the week's fury: Gillis's monologue, in which he joked of a gym visit, "I didn't know women just dressed like whores now."

LateNighter reports the bit drew widespread criticism, with some backlash aimed at SNL itself for airing the material, and that Gillis also accidentally dropped an F-bomb during a sketch, apologizing twice live on air — once at the sketch's end and again at goodnights.

While Lorne Michaels and reps for the New York show have stayed silent, Bleeding Cool's Ray Flook goes further, calling the monologue a "steaming pile" and asking what exactly "whore" was a punchline to.

A Global Pile-On, and What's Next

Magliano's jab is part of a widening international pile-on.

The Irish Mirror reports that Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty opened Friday's RTÉ program in Dublin with a dig of his own: "We are live from Dublin in the week where we discovered the incredible news that women at the gym sometimes work out in shorts, yes. While sometimes men will never work out how to stop talking out of their arses."

The studio audience applauded.
