Lightning from Tropical Storm Rachel forced Head Trip to cancel Saturday, shifting Calvin Harris's set to Sunday.
A Lightning Alert Ended Night One
The debut Head Trip festival at Indio's Empire Polo Club was canceled for Saturday night as the National Weather Service warned of lightning in the area. Around 9 p.m., attendees were told via the festival app and on-stage screens to "exit the venue the way you entered and seek shelter in personal vehicles or shuttles," and organizers confirmed roughly 30 minutes later that the evening's remaining performances — including headliner Calvin Harris — were off. The NWS issued an airport weather warning for Palm Springs International Airport about 20 miles away, citing potential cloud-to-ground lightning from 9:30 to 11 p.m. as thunderstorms tied to Tropical Storm Rachel's landfall moved in.
A 'Unified Command' Made the Call
The decision was not made by the promoter alone. According to the Desert Sun, Indio Police spokesperson Abraham Plata said in a Sunday statement that canceling the remainder of Head Trip at 9 p.m. was done under a "unified command" that included the Indio Police Department, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire and promoter Goldenvoice. "This was done out of an abundance of caution due to weather conditions," Plata said, thanking event staff and safety personnel for prioritizing public safety. Organizers had already trimmed the schedule hours earlier — moving doors to 4 p.m. and curfew to 11 p.m. — before deteriorating conditions ended the night entirely.
Harris Slotted In, Swedish House Mafia Shortened
The Desert Sun reports that fans who missed Calvin Harris on Saturday no longer need to fret: the Scottish DJ has been added to Sunday's lineup. Notably, no artists were dropped from Sunday's bill to make room, but the show now starts an hour earlier than Saturday did, and Swedish House Mafia will play for only one hour as certain sets were shortened to fit Harris in. That compromise — a second headliner squeezed onto an already full day — is the clearest sign of how much organizers wanted to deliver the canceled set.
Second Goldenvoice Evacuation This Year
This is the second time a Goldenvoice festival at the Empire Polo grounds has faced a weather suspension in 2026. Per the Desert Sun's recap, the Stagecoach country festival at the same site was evacuated in April when gusts of 55-65 mph and blowing sand hit the grounds, shuffling the schedule so Journey and Riley Green never performed while headliner Lainey Wilson's set went ahead. For a one-time-only EDM event built around a massive stage designed by Romain Pissenem and his company High Scream, a weather cancellation on night one is a bruising start — especially with a wind advisory for the Coachella Valley running from 2 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, forecasting gusts of 35 to 45 mph and possible downed tree limbs and power outages.
Fans Stayed Upbeat Despite the Storm
Coverage from the grounds painted a strikingly positive picture despite the chaos. The Desert Sun's team noted that Head Trip offered more tents and shade than Coachella, with shelter near food areas like the Beer Barn and the Sunflower Sound System — the custom-built hi-fi environment Floating Points, aka Sam Shepherd, spent more than a decade developing, though its line was overwhelmingly long. Reporters spoke with several fans who were in high spirits despite muggy conditions and a sprinkle at gates, and earlier in the evening the crowd had already soaked up a FISHER and Chris Lake Under Construction B2B before the music was halted, according to CULTR.
What Comes Next Under Rachel
Sunday's forecast offered only partial relief. The Desert Sun reported rain continuing into Sunday morning and early afternoon, with a cooler high of 84 degrees and meteorologist Adam Roser of the NWS's San Diego office warning it would be the windiest day, with gusts potentially up to 30 mph. While Saturday's closing sets were lost, the rescheduled Sunday bill now carries both Calvin Harris and a shortened Swedish House Mafia set, and the festival's Apple Music livestream continues for fans worldwide. With Tropical Storm Rachel's broader system moving through Southern California, attendees were advised to keep the festival app's push notifications on for further weather-induced changes.
