Patriots Trade WR Boutte to Texans for S Reed

New England sent Kayshon Boutte to Houston after Jayden Higgins' ACL tear, receiving safety Jaylen.

The Deal

On August 24, 2026, the New England Patriots traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. The Ringer's Tom Pelissero first reported the trade, which was processed Monday on the league wire. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the deal. The move came just days before the NFL's roster cutdown deadline on August 30, addressing roster needs for both franchises with the regular season approaching.

The Deal

Why It's Surprising

Boutte had been one of quarterback Drake Maye's most reliable deep targets during the Patriots' run to Super Bowl LX. According to NFL.com, Boutte caught seven passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in playoff wins over the Chargers and Texans. The Athletic notes that Boutte posted 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns in the 2025 season, and his nine touchdown receptions over the past two seasons were tied with tight end Hunter Henry for the most by any Patriots player in that span. Trading a productive deep threat from a Super Bowl contender raised eyebrows across the league.

Why It's Surprising

The Crowded Receiver Room

Boutte's departure was foreshadowed by New England's aggressive offseason receiver overhaul. The Patriots acquired A.J. Brown in a trade with the Eagles and signed former Packers wideout Romeo Doubs in free agency. According to The Athletic, Boutte skipped voluntary spring practices and told reporters in June that he wanted what was best for himself, "whether it's here or somewhere else." His frustration stemmed from a projected diminished role in a contract year. Sporting News reports the Patriots already had at least six receivers projected to make the 53-man roster, making Boutte expendable.

Houston's Urgent Need

The Texans weren't initially in the market for a receiver, but that changed when second-year wideout Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending ACL tear during a joint practice with the Raiders. According to AOL, Higgins had been expected to serve as Houston's No. 2 receiver behind Nico Collins after posting 525 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2025. Veteran Tank Dell also missed practices during training camp while recovering from a major knee injury. General Manager Nick Caserio, a former Patriots executive, swung the deal with his old employer to find an outside receiver who excels at winning deep.

What New England Gets

The Patriots received 23-year-old safety Jaylen Reed, a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Penn State. According to TSN, Reed played in seven games for the Texans, registering 14 tackles with 12 of those coming in a November 20 win over the Buffalo Bills. Heavy.com reports that Reed started both of Houston's playoff games alongside Calen Bullock. The Athletic notes that coach Mike Vrabel bluntly declared two days before the trade that he didn't think the Patriots had "a very deep team." Reed provides safety depth behind starters Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard and can contribute on special teams.

What Comes Next

The Texans will work to acclimate Boutte with quarterback C.J. Stroud quickly, as NFL.com notes, with the regular season opening September 13 at home against the Buffalo Bills. Boutte enters the final year of his contract, making this effectively a rental for Houston. The defending AFC champion Patriots begin their 2026 campaign on September 9 against the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl rematch, according to TSN. Pats Pulpit analysts offered mixed grades ranging from C-minus to A, with some expressing concern that the Patriots could face Boutte and the Texans in the playoffs and the trade might come back to haunt them.
