Auburn's Chas Nimrod hauled in a one-handed touchdown catch off a defender's back against top-ranked Georgia, tying the game in Athens.
The catch that silenced Sanford Stadium
Nimrod adjusted to the ball, extended his left arm around Jones's body and used his hand — and the back of the defender — to reel in the scoring grab. The touchdown, converted with a made extra point, tied the game 14-14 and, per Yahoo Sports, quieted Sanford Stadium.
Why it was so improbable
The degree of difficulty is what makes the play remarkable. Yahoo Sports, citing Pro Football Focus, reports that Jones had not allowed a touchdown all season before this play.
Saturday Down South framed it bluntly, writing that Nimrod has 'entered the Catch of the Year conversation' and calling it 'undoubtedly one of the best we'll see this college football season.'
ESPN amplified the moment, posting the clip on social media with the question, 'How did Chas Nimrod catch this? 😱'. A touchdown on the nation's No. 1 team, against a shut-down corner, in its own stadium, makes this a genuine upset of expectations.
The trust behind the throw
According to Yahoo Sports, Brown and Nimrod built real chemistry last season at South Florida, and that faith paid off on the biggest stage. The two are part of the group of USF players head coach Alex Golesh carried over from Tampa to Auburn.
Saturday Down South adds that Nimrod began his college career in 2022, when Golesh was offensive coordinator, transferred to USF in 2024 to reunite with Golesh as Bulls head coach, and then followed him to The Plains for a return to the SEC.
In the first half Saturday, Saturday Down South reports Nimrod had 3 catches on 5 targets for 24 receiving yards plus the highlight touchdown.
A season of production and a halftime lead
The catch did not just provide a highlight — it flipped the game. After tying it 14-14, Yahoo Sports reports Auburn blocked a Georgia field goal, made one of its own and intercepted Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton to take a 17-14 advantage into halftime.
Nimrod has been producing all season: Yahoo Sports notes he entered Saturday ranked second among Auburn players in receiving yards with 25 catches and 273 yards, and tied for first in touchdown receptions with two, through the Tigers' first five games.
Last year at USF, he caught 23 passes for 466 yards and three touchdowns in just seven games.
What comes next
The second half of the rivalry showdown remained live as coverage was filed — Yahoo Sports noted its story was being updated — but the catch had already become the moment everyone would remember from the game.
Prediction markets tracked by Saturday Down South still gave Georgia a 90% chance to win, underscoring how much of an underdog Nimrod's play kept Auburn in the fight.
