The armed bystander who stopped the Silver Rail Elementary shooter has come forward as Bend dad Kaylub Giamanco, and he is not seeking recognition.
The Man Who Ran Toward the School Has a Name
The bystander who followed a 16-year-old gunman into Silver Rail Elementary School and fatally shot him has identified himself as Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong Bend resident with two daughters at the school.
According to CBS News reporting cited by The National Desk, officials did not officially name him, but he came forward through his family.
In a statement released by Giamanco's family, they said he 'is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support.'
The Statesman Journal reports the family identified him as 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco.
Why His Intervention Stood Out This Time
The new detail changes the picture substantially. According to the Statesman Journal, Giamanco was the second driver near the school; he had a weapon legally in his car, found the suspect in an altercation with a teacher, and shot the suspect multiple times.
The Bend Source reports the first driver, in a red Tacoma pickup, confronted the gunman outside and was shot at before calling 911.
A Teacher's Tackle Also Helped Save Lives
Credit for limiting the bloodshed is not Giamanco's alone. The Statesman Journal reports that one teacher, who was not injured, tackled the suspect, and Chief Krantz said that act 'almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.'
Law enforcement also confirmed at an October 16 press conference that all victims shot were in the same special needs classroom, the same room where the suspect, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, had once been a special needs student.
The New York Post reports a 7-year-old student who uses a wheelchair was shot in the face and is recovering from surgery after being listed in critical condition alongside a 54-year-old teacher.
Leaders and Community Rally Around the Responder
Praise for Giamanco has come from the highest levels. Oregon Gov.
Tina Kotek said her heart was 'absolutely broken' and told him directly, 'Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well.'
President Donald Trump, briefed on the shooting, told reporters: 'There was a great hero... thank goodness for a man that had a gun and knew how to use it.'
The Community's Balance of Grief and Gratitude
The identification of the hero comes alongside painful new details about the victims.
The Statesman Journal reports police identified 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert as two of the victims, while the families of two boys, ages 8 and 11, asked that their identities not be shared.
The New York Post reports the shooter's mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, tearfully said, 'If I could have prevented this, I would have.'
Against that grief, the Bend Source describes parents, teachers and children embracing at a reunification site at Journey Church, where high school brothers Gavin and Zade Straw volunteered to help any way they could.
What Comes Next for Bend and the Investigation
The investigation continues, and officials are treating the classroom as a crime scene. The Statesman Journal reports Bend police expect to keep investigating the classroom at least through October 20, and tips can be submitted to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or at fbi.gov › silverrailschool.
FBI Director Kash Patel said his agency is assisting, including examining the suspect's connection, if any, to the school.
