Net Influencer reports Sony's creator push follows outsized theatrical returns for Curry Barker's 'Obsession' and Kane Parsons' 'Backrooms' this year.

Why Sony Made the Leap: Two Tiny Budgets, Big Theatrical Returns

According to Net Influencer, the hiring follows a run of box office results that made digital-native filmmakers hard for studios to ignore: Curry Barker's "Obsession" and Kane Parsons' "Backrooms" both posted outsized theatrical returns this year against minimal production budgets, a pattern Sanford Panitch's statement points to directly in explaining the shift.

The outlet draws a sharp contrast with the last creator-film cycle around 2015, when YouTuber-fronted movies like "Smosh: The Movie" and Awesomeness Films' "Expelled" stayed confined to digital and limited theatrical distribution.

This time, the results are wide theatrical ones at a scale the 2015 slate never approached.

A Hiring Profile Built Around Creator Sensitivities

Net Influencer reports, citing TheWrap, that an insider said Goldenberg was chosen specifically for his understanding of creators' needs and sensitivities, since digital talent often functions as director, writer, producer and star on one project — multiple roles that make creators protective of both their IP rights and the audience relationships they have built.

At YouTube, Goldenberg is credited with guiding filmmakers including Barker, Parsons and Markiplier, managed the platform's exclusive digital release of Markiplier's "Iron Lung," and helped negotiate YouTube's rights deal to air the Oscars.

"After 15 years at YouTube, the world's biggest digital platform, I know firsthand that the next generation of great filmmakers is already building audiences on the platform," Goldenberg said.

Screen Gems Fits a Wider Sony Creator Play

Net Influencer situates the appointment in a broader Sony pattern: Sony Pictures Television hired former BBC Studios and Channel 4 executive Matt Ford as VP of Commercial, Digital last year to build creator partnerships across streaming, social and audio in the UK, and brought in Charlotte Moore from the BBC to run Left Bank while serving as creative director of international production.

The outlet also notes IMDb added "Digital Creator" as a professional category this September, with sub-professions like "Streamer" and "Video Creator," formally making internet-native talent discoverable inside the traditional hiring system.

What Happens to Brucks and the Genre Slate

Ttvnews describes the new creative direction as keeping Screen Gems' genre focus while incorporating projects based on the ideas, narrative universes and communities developed by digital creators, aimed at identifying new IP for theatrical release.

"Some of the most exciting filmmakers and ideas are emerging from creators operating outside Hollywood's traditional development channels," Panitch said.
