Southwest's largest-ever summer schedule adds 11 routes across 15 cities, including new Caribbean service from Austin and Nashville.
What Happened: Southwest Drops Its Summer 2027 Route Plan
Southwest Airlines on Friday, October 2, published its summer 2027 schedule for booking, unveiling 11 new or returning routes that touch 15 cities. Nine of the routes are services the airline has never operated before. The season runs from June 3 through August 2, 2027, and the carrier says it has scheduled 4,498 trips on peak days — the most Southwest has ever offered in a single summer schedule. The new flights are bookable now at southwest.com.
Why It Matters: Austin Goes Tropical
Austin Bergstrom International Airport is the biggest winner, with seven new or returning routes. Three are international weekend services the airline has never flown from Austin: Liberia in Costa Rica (LIR), Nassau in the Bahamas (NAS), and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (PUJ). They join an existing international lineup that already includes Cancun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and San José, Costa Rica. Southwest expects around 143 daily departures from Austin on peak days, its largest-ever schedule there.
Nashville and San Diego Round Out the Expansion
Nashville lands Southwest's biggest summer yet, with as many as 220 daily flights — up to 20 more departures than summer 2026, per Upgraded Points, which ties the growth to the crew base Southwest opened there in 2024. Nashville gains three new routes: Boise, Nassau and Providenciales in Turks and Caicos. San Diego adds a single new Sunday service to Oklahoma City, alongside returning seasonal flights to Bozeman, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Columbus, per Upgraded Points.
Florida Gains as Orlando Keeps Growing
Florida Today reports that Orlando International Airport trips will increase to 173 in summer 2027, 17 more than last year, with one new route connecting Orlando to Des Moines, Iowa, and the seasonal Saturday service between Austin and Sarasota returning. That builds on a broader push after Spirit Airlines abruptly shut down in May, when Southwest announced six new Florida routes and increased service to 17 more, according to Florida Today. The paper also notes Southwest is bringing back 28 seasonal Florida routes this winter.
The Competition Angle: Defending Austin and Nashville
The Points Guy frames the expansion as a response to growing competition, noting Delta has been rapidly adding routes at Austin, an airport it has made one of its top focus cities — though Southwest remains the clear leader there. Upgraded Points and The Points Guy both note construction is already underway on Southwest's first-ever airport lounges at both Austin and Nashville, with the lounges planned among four the airline intends to open. Upgraded Points also reports Las Vegas climbing to up to 278 daily trips and a return of daily Las Vegas–Anchorage service in June 2027.
What Comes Next: Book Early, Fly Weekends
Most of the new routes run only on weekends or specific days during the peak season, and InsideFlyer advises that booking early is critical since limited-day capacity may fill fast. Upgraded Points echoes the advice, saying booking dates early is a smart move before other travelers grab the seats. Southwest will publish a reduced July 4 schedule later, according to Upgraded Points, which says the summer plan is built from five distinct daily schedules.
