Drake bankrolled k-os' new album 'BLackneck,' the Toronto pioneer's first LP in over a decade, due out Oct. 30.

What Happened: Drake Bankrolls a Comeback

Billboard Canada and Exclaim! both report that Canadian hip-hop veteran k-os will release *BLackneck* on October 30 via Spiritual Tech Records through The Orchard — his first studio album since 2015's *Can't Fly Without Gravity*, as Exclaim! notes.

The twist is who paid for it: Drake is credited as an executive producer and, according to Billboard Canada, served as the project's "chief financier." "Drake was like, 'please make me a k-os record, please, please, please,'" k-os tells the publication.

Why It's Surprising: Mentorship Reverses Roles

The roles have flipped. As Billboard Canada tells it, Drake grew up watching k-os on MuchMusic in the 2000s and collaborated with him on "Faith" parts one and two in the early 2010s; after they reconnected at a club in 2021 or 2022, the global superstar became the patron.

Exclaim! reports a post from Complex on k-os' Instagram described Drake as "a longtime fan whose own music was deeply influenced by k-os's records." k-os frames it plainly: "Our relationship is strictly defined by inspiration. We inspire each other."

The Evidence: a Major-Label Budget in the Streaming Era

Billboard Canada reports the funding let k-os make big swings a label would no longer greenlight — hiring the Vancouver String Orchestra, choirs and symphonic elements for the song "Still Number 1", fusing country and hip-hop on "OK Corall", and even bringing in Bob Rock, the producer of Metallica, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith, for the rock cut "I Would Never". k-os says manager Matte Babel, DreamCrew's chief brand officer, booked sessions — "in some cases Babel rolled up to the studio with bags of cash," he tells Billboard Canada.

The Stakes: Canada's Hip-Hop Lineage Gets Its Receipts

Billboard Canada reports k-os sees the album as proof of the lane he forged — blending singing with rap — and of the generation it enabled: Drake, The Weeknd, Tory Lanez and Justin Bieber.

"Do you think there would be a Drake, The Weeknd, Tory Lanez, all these if they didn't hear me doing my thing?" he asks, while insisting he is not conceited about it.

He also tells Billboard Canada that *BLackneck* is the "best of everything" he has done, citing OutKast, Shania Twain, Our Lady Peace and Radiohead as the era that shaped it.

What Comes Next: October 30 and the 'Guns&Roses' Preview

The album lands October 30 with a seven-track tracklist, per Billboard Canada, and Exclaim! reports a new single called "Guns&Roses" — described by that outlet as "very classic-k-os-sounding" — already dropped on October 2.

Billboard Canada notes k-os felt the pressure of Drake's money "almost like gambling," but says Drake listened and called it "incredible". Exclaim! notes there were few other details beyond the release plan, so fans have days, not weeks, before the full picture arrives.
