Prince Harry and Meghan made their first joint public appearance since moving back to the U.K. in August, visiting Nottingham.

The Couple's First Joint Outing Since the U.K. Move

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first official joint public appearance since moving from California to the U.K. in August, arriving in Nottingham, England on October 15 for the first of three charity-linked engagements, as reported by Yahoo, realtor.com and E! News.

The couple were greeted by a cheering crowd of hundreds, with shouts of "I love you Duchess Meghan," selfies with fans, and bouquets of flowers presented to the Duchess.

Meghan told a member of the crowd it's "great to be back," and both she and Harry told onlookers it was "great" to be back in Britain, per the BBC and Press Association as cited by Yahoo and realtor.com.

Back Where Their Royal Story Began

The choice of Nottingham carries deliberate symbolism. The couple's first official joint appearance after their 2017 engagement announcement took place in the same city, in December 2017, and E!

News reports that when one well-wisher showed Meghan a photograph from that 2017 visit, she replied, "That's so special." HELLO!

Magazine frames the outing as a careful "relaunch" moment, quoting BBC royal correspondent Noor Nanji, who said Meghan's team will have thought very carefully about where to relaunch her into U.K. public life.

The couple's spokesperson told the BBC they are back "primarily because they support and believe in the organizations they are visiting," per Yahoo.

A Burgundy Nod to 2017 — All British Labels

HELLO!

Magazine notes the Duchess echoed her 2017 fashion formula with a tonal update: a burgundy wool coat and matching high-neck jumper from Joseph, a pencil skirt from The Fold, an M&S belt and Jennifer Chamandi heels — swapping navy for wine-red but keeping the familiar coat-and-skirt silhouette.

Yahoo and E! News both describe the fall-inspired all-burgundy look with hair in a ponytail, while Harry paired dark jeans with a gray blazer and white shirt.

E! News also notes the visit to the Community Recording Studio (CRS), a charity giving young people access to music and professional recording equipment, with further visits to Epic Partners and the Hubb Community Kitchen planned, according to realtor.com.

Not Working Royals — Private Security Instead

Yahoo and AOL both stress that although the scene resembled a traditional royal engagement, with photographers, journalists and barriers, this was not an official royal visit.

Since stepping back in 2020, the Sussexes are no longer working royals, meaning they are not entitled to British taxpayer-funded police protection and were accompanied by private security, with Harry still seeking that protection according to aol.co.uk. E!

News reports that King Charles, in a Sept. 7 statement via Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon, confirmed the move created "no change" to their status, calling their charitable work "a personal matter... undertaken in their private capacity."

Family Life: Gymnastics, Math and New Schools

The outing offered rare family details. Yahoo reports Meghan revealed daughter Lilibet has been enjoying gymnastics, telling a group of young girls, "Our daughter is doing that too right now. She loves it," and that she feels most like herself when cooking with her family.

Star Magazine reports Harry shared that son Archie asked whether he could attend "a school that doesn't do math" — only for math to be his first class at his new school.

According to realtor.com, Archie and Lilibet changed schools just two days into the academic year over security and logistical concerns, and the couple now schedules commitments around school hours.

What Comes Next for the Sussexes

realtor.com reports the family is staying at a friend's Cotswolds mansion while reportedly eyeing a U.K. property, with Meghan said to want nine bedrooms and even a filming studio ahead of her return to acting, and Harry seeking extensive land with no footpaths for privacy — while retaining their Montecito mansion.

The Times of London reports the couple are "happy and settled," though Yahoo notes the return has not been free of friction, with the school change and a letter on behalf of King Charles confirming their non-working royal status said to have surprised the pair.

With two more charity visits to go, their cautious U.K. re-entry appears to be just beginning.
