JH's webtoon 'The Boxer' gets a TV anime announced at New York Comic Con as a Crunchyroll–HAYATE–WEBTOON co-production, with cast and staff revealed.
The Reveal: JH's Boxing Webtoon Steps Into the Ring
Crunchyroll announced at its New York Comic Con panel that JH's webtoon *The Boxer* is getting a television anime adaptation, per Anime News Network and Anime Trending. A trailer confirmed the main cast: Kōki Uchiyama as Yu, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as J, Tomokazu Seki as K, and Kenshō Ono as Ryu. Both outlets report Takehiro Kubota (*My Happy Marriage*) and KANG Wonyeong are directing, with Masahiro Suwa (*The Rising of the Shield Hero*) as character designer and Toshiya Ono (*86 EIGHTY-SIX*) as series composer. No premiere date has been announced yet. Anime Trending notes Crunchyroll debuted an English-subtitled trailer at the panel and will stream the series.
A First-Time Studio and a Cross-Border Production
According to Anime News Network, the animation is being handled by breccia — a brand-new Japanese studio founded by Kinema Citrus founding member and producer Muneki Ogasawara — alongside Korean animation studio Studio Jemi. That two-studio, Japan–Korea setup is an unusual arrangement for a webtoon adaptation. Anime News Network adds that HAYATE Inc., the anime production venture from Aniplex and Crunchyroll, is producing, with co-producers including LINE Manga, Crunchyroll, XTORM and BLUE RIGHTS.
Why This Webtoon Earned the Adaptation
The scale of the source material is striking: Anime News Network reports *The Boxer* has more than 1.06 billion global views as of September, and won an award at the World Webtoon Awards in 2024. The series ran on Naver Webtoon in Korea from December 2019 to June 2022, per Anime Trending, with thirteen volumes published in South Korea as of September 2025. WEBTOON has released the full series in English digitally, and Ize Press is publishing it in print. Author JH (Ji-Hoon Jeong) is also known for *The Horizon*, which Anime News Network notes won the Yellow Kid 'Book of the Year' award at Lucca Comics & Games in November 2025.
The Trailer and What Comes Next
The story Crunchyroll describes is a boxing drama about a legendary coach, K, finding his 'final disciple' in Yu, an apathetic boy whose 'monstrous' talent asks what it truly means to be strong. Beyond the show itself, Anime Trending reports Crunchyroll announced a co-production partnership with HAYATE and WEBTOON Entertainment subsidiary LINE Digital Frontier to develop around 15 select WEBTOON titles into anime, with Crunchyroll streaming the results exclusively in select territories. Fans can expect a premiere window in a future announcement.
