Jefferson White's Jimmy returns in Marshals season 2 to help Kayce, finally building the bond Yellowstone never gave them.
A First-Era Pairing Sheridan Never Wrote
ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, in an exclusive interview with Luke Grimes and Ash Santos ahead of the spinoff's return, reports that Jefferson White is reprising Jimmy Hurdstrom on CBS's *Marshals* in a recurring capacity — and that season 2 marks the first time Kayce Dutton and Jimmy will actually share a meaningful storyline.
Grimes says the two characters "didn't have any relationship" in Taylor Sheridan's original show and "barely ever" shared scenes, because Kayce lived in his own world with Monica and Tate and never visited the bunkhouse where Jimmy's scenes were set.
The spinoff, Grimes tells ScreenRant, lets them build "this brand-new relationship" that "has been really fun."
Jimmy Comes to Repay a Debt to John Dutton
According to ScreenRant, Grimes offered the first story reasoning for White's return: with Kayce "having a hard time juggling" running his ranch, being a father, and being a marshal, he turns to Jimmy for help.
Grimes explains the motivation plainly — "Jimmy feels he has a debt to John Dutton for saving his life and putting him on this great new path, and making him into this cowboy. Out of the debt to that, he comes to help Kayce out."
ScreenRant notes Jimmy had moved to Texas late in the original series, and while the Beth-and-Rip *Dutton Ranch* spinoff shifted to the Lone Star State, CBS's series has stayed rooted in Montana, making his arrival a genuine homecoming.
Behind the Scenes: White 'Lights the Whole Set Up'
ScreenRant also reports that Ash Santos, whose Andrea Cruz debuted in Marshals' first season, praised White's presence on set, saying he has "such vivacious energy" and "kind of lights the whole set up."
"I love the little improv he throws into the scenes, because it's always so funny," Santos told ScreenRant, calling him a wonderful actor.
She confirmed Jimmy and Andrea have "had a few scenes together" so far — a detail ScreenRant flags as significant, since fans have theorized Andrea could eventually become Kayce's replacement love interest for Monica, and her extra time at East Camp plus shared screen time may point to that dynamic developing this season.
Stakes: Confronting the Past, With 'Falling Sky' Next
The bigger question, the outlet writes, is what Kayce and Jimmy's dynamic will look like: by the end of the original series Kayce sought to distance himself from his father and the family legacy, so Jimmy's return could force him to relive or confront demons of their shared past.
Meanwhile, Seat42F reports the next new episode, "Falling Sky," airs Sunday, October 18 from 8:30–9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, streaming live with Paramount+ Premium and next-day for Essential subscribers on Monday, October 19.
