China's CXMT claimed key progress on a denser 4F-square DRAM design, sending Micron and SK Hynix down about 4% despite record AI-driven memory demand.

What happened: a Shanghai stage shook memory stocks

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), the Chinese DRAM maker that U.S. investors cannot trade, announced significant progress on a next-generation memory-cell architecture over the weekend, and memory stocks sold off hard on Monday.

Micron Technology fell about 4% to $984.28, while SK Hynix also dropped 4% to $162.13, according to 24/7 Wall St., and Western Digital slipped 2% to $389.04. The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) declined 4% to $54.75, showing the selling spread across the whole group, per 24/7 Wall St.

The surprise: a 4F-square cell is a paradigm shift

The heart of the claim is the "4F square" structure, in which each memory cell occupies an area of four squares of F, where F is the smallest line width of a semiconductor device — a leap from the 6F-square cell used in mainstream DRAM today.

According to Geo News, the shift moves transistors from horizontal to vertical channels, with CXMT's Vertical Surrounding Gate transistor solving leakage while cutting unit area, and the architecture could raise memory density by 30%–50%.

CXMT President Cao Kanyu presented at an industry event in Shanghai and said the company aims to introduce a server memory product built on the design, including next-generation DDR5 RDIMM, by the end of 2026, per 24/7 Wall St. Investor's Business Daily notes CXMT is racing the same architecture that every major memory maker is chasing.

Why it lands where the money is: server memory

Server memory is the most profitable corner of the industry, where AI buildouts have driven the strongest demand and pricing has held up best. 24/7 Wall St. points out that Micron's adjusted gross margin reached 87% last quarter, up from 45.7% a year earlier — the pricing power now in CXMT's sights.

Micron's Core Data Center segment brought in $18 billion last quarter and Cloud Memory added $16.28 billion.

Micron also enters this fight from strength: its fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of $54.23 billion beat the $50.97 billion estimate, adjusted EPS of $33.42 topped the $31.35 consensus, and management guided fiscal Q1 2027 to $61.5 billion in revenue and $38.15 adjusted EPS at the midpoints, per 24/7 Wall St.

Bulls vs. skeptics: nothing ships yet

Optimists note CXMT's server product remains a stated target with nothing shipping and no customer qualification yet, and that AI demand has so far absorbed everything the industry can make.

24/7 Wall St. quotes Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra from the September 30 earnings call: "we do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance."

He added that "in calendar year 27 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply" — a forecast now facing a test from a new competitor. Skeptics counter that memory has always been boom-and-bust, and a new entrant arriving with a denser design is exactly how prior cycles turned over.

The smaller 2% decline in Western Digital suggests the threat is aimed at one product class while storage stays broadly intact, per 24/7 Wall St.

What to watch next: shipping and qualification

Geo News adds a second Micron overhang from Taiwan, where a union wants 15% of operational profit given to employees as a quarterly bonus; Taiwan accounts for more than 80% of Micron's workforce, according to Geo News. It also reports options positioning in chip ETFs has turned heavily put-biased.

Holders of MU, SKHY and WDC shares may want to keep memory-sector exposure appropriately sized for a group that has run hard — Micron is still up 245% year to date and Western Digital up 126% — and now faces a credible challenger.
