USA Today reports Taco Bell rebranded National Taco Day as 'Global Taco Day' with Duolingo, adding sauce, plushie and app freebies.
What happened: a sauce packet in many languages
USA Today reports that Taco Bell declared October 6, 2026 "Global Taco Day" through a partnership with language-learning app Duolingo. The centerpiece is a limited-edition Duo Habanero sauce inspired by Duolingo's green owl mascot, free in the United States with a Doritos Locos Tacos purchase or available as a 20-cent packet. According to USA Today, the sauce packets feature taco-themed sayings in various languages, tying the promotion directly to the app's translation brand.
Why it is surprising: the holiday moved, then got rebranded
The strange part is how mutable this food holiday has become. USA Today notes National Taco Day used to fall on October 4 each year, but was changed in 2024 to always land on Taco Tuesday, the first Tuesday of October — which made the 2026 date October 6.
The owl plushie drop and the app freebie
According to USA Today, Taco Bell will give away 1,000 limited-edition owl mascots wearing a Taco Bell uniform and headset, with Taco Bell Rewards members able to enter via the chain's Tuesday Drops page on October 6 at 5 p.m. ET. Rewards members without a Duolingo subscription could also claim a free month of Super Duolingo — an offer USA Today says ran October 1 through October 6, with codes redeemable by November 15.
Beyond the collab: app-order deals at Taco Bell
Both USA Today and azcentral report the same delivery-app offers for October 6: a free crunchy or soft seasoned beef taco on Taco Bell orders of $22 or more through Uber Eats and Grubhub, and a free Doritos Locos taco for Uber One students spending $20 or more. Per those outlets, DoorDash customers spending $22 or more could choose a free cantina chicken soft taco, soft taco or supreme, crunchy taco or supreme, or a Doritos Locos taco or supreme.
The rest of the taco-deal board
The promotion pile-up is the story's real stakes. USA Today says Jack in the Box app users spending $1 or more get two free tacos on October 6, Moe's Southwest Grill sells up to three tacos for $2 each (through October 11 for members, per Clarin), and Del Taco launched a month-long "Tacoberfest" of weekly BOGO deals for Del Yeah! Rewards members. USA Today also lists Chuy's free entree for guests dressed as a taco posting with #ChuysTacoDay, Torchy's BOGO for members, half-price tacos at Condado, and Margaritas' 2-pound Taco Giganta challenge — finish it and the chain gives you free weekly tacos for a year starting November 30.
