Apple's $299 HomeView smart display is open for preorder ahead of its Nov. 13 launch, with a swiveling successor possibly coming.

Apple's first smart display opens for preorder

Apple's HomeView, the company's first dedicated smart home display, is available for preorder now at $299, with official availability beginning November 13, according to Fox News.

The tabletop model pairs a 7-inch square Liquid Retina display with Siri AI, a Center Stage camera, and FaceTime, and a wall-mounted version is offered at extra cost.

MacRumors reports Amazon has quietly returned a small preorder discount, selling the Rose Pink colorway for $289.99, and notes that Amazon delivery estimates have already stretched into late November, past launch day.

Six-person personalization is the real trick

The feature that separates HomeView from a propped-up tablet is shared-household personalization.

CNET's hands-on at Apple's Welcome Home event in New York found Face ID recognition worked quickly, registering up to six household members and pulling each person's calendar, scheduled events, and preferred home screen the moment they stepped in front of it.

Gadget Hacks adds that personal content requires a recently unlocked, Apple Intelligence-enabled paired iPhone or iPad, and that the display returns to a shared household mode within seconds after a recognized user leaves the camera's view, protecting private messages and appointments.

Setup without third-party app chaos

CNET's reviewer, who juggles ten-plus smart home apps from Hue, Govee, TP-Link and Eufy devices, called HomeView's app-free device pairing one of the most compelling things he has seen in the smart home world, watching a new accessory get found, paired and registered through the Apple Home app mid-conversation.

Gadget Hacks notes the display also handles recipe Handoff from a nearby iPhone, reformatting a saved recipe into guided, hands-free steps with inline timers. The caveat: HomeView runs no App Store, offering only curated first-party apps plus a handful of media apps like Spotify.

A swiveling HomeView Max may be next

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports, via PCMag, that Apple is developing a higher-end HomeView codenamed J595 with a roughly 9-inch display that swivels a full 360 degrees, using voice recognition to find and face you around the room during calls.

The new model would sit alongside the current device rather than replace it, similar to how HomePod mini and HomePod occupy different price points, and could arrive next year or as late as 2028.

Bloomberg also reports the first HomeView was originally meant to launch in 2024 before repeated delays pushed it to next month.

Analysts see a crack in Amazon and Google's hold

The Futurum Group argues HomeView could break Amazon and Google's grip on the segment by tying shared household controls to the devices 1.5 billion iPhone users already carry, backed by Apple's privacy reputation and a coordinated accessory lineup.

The analyst firm also flags the costs: wall-mounted setups total at least $358.95 before installation, with Home Collection cameras and thermostats at $199.95, a smart lock at $349.95 and a floodlight camera at $399.95.

Parks Associates, meanwhile, reports 37% of recent security system buyers are renters, a segment Apple's LG-built cameras and ADT installation partnership could reach.

Skip it, or wait — an iPad may already do the job

Gadget Hacks notes the overlap with an idle iPad is bigger than Apple's marketing suggests: both run the Home app, FaceTime, Apple Music, Messages and Safari, and an iPad in a drawer costs only a stand to repurpose.

ZDNET's alternatives list includes the Echo Show 8, the Skylight Calendar and the Echo Hub, with two cheaper than Apple's $299.

For committed Apple households wanting six-person personalization, a multi-camera dashboard and guided cooking, November 13 is worth watching — but reviewers agree HomeView, in Tom's Guide's words cited by Gadget Hacks, still has plenty to prove.
