The NBA has agreed with major sportsbooks to eliminate certain player-stat bets that federal indictments showed could be manipulated by players.

What the league is banning

The NBA has reached an agreement with prominent sportsbooks to eliminate certain types of bets from the gambling landscape, targeting wagers that can be easily manipulated by players or other involved parties.

Per the banned list reported by Blazer's Edge, citing ESPN's Shams Charania, the prohibited markets are: parlay bets involving the under on the same player's statistics; "first of" markets such as winner of the opening tip or a specific shot, rebound, assist or steal; and under bets on players expected to play less than 12 minutes a game.

Sportsbooks will also be barred from offering alternate lines on unders with larger payouts.

Why it happened: the Porter and Rozier cases

Blazer's Edge reports the restrictions come as a direct result of prior malfeasance, with co-author David Purdum tying the move to federal cases involving Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier.

Porter admitted in court that he intentionally removed himself from games early to benefit bettors while on a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors in 2023-24.

According to Blazer's Edge, federal prosecutors said one charged bettor placed an $80,000 parlay on unders across Porter's assists, rebounds, points, 3-pointers, steals and blocks for a March 2024 Raptors-Kings game, which would have paid roughly $1.1 million; Porter exited after three minutes.

The Rozier precedent and the league's reasoning

The same pattern allegedly appeared with Terry Rozier a year earlier.

Federal prosecutors, as described in Blazer's Edge's report, allege bettors took a similar approach in a March 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans, with parlays on the under of Rozier's stats; the veteran guard, then with the Hornets, left after playing approximately nine minutes.

Rozier has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. A memo cited in the report described such parlays as "low likelihood, high payout bets," and Kaufman-Ross said the Porter and Rozier cases were factors in deciding to prohibit them.

The stakes going forward

For fans, markets built on individual player stat lines will shrink, particularly unders and exotic props tied to marginal moments like the opening tip.

It also arrives with gambling scrutiny broader than basketball: The Sports Geek's news feed notes an FTC probe into sportsbooks like FanDuel and DraftKings and the Beasley-Davis gambling case, with three defendants expected to plead guilty.
