A Maryland man was convicted of computer fraud and money laundering for two 2021 hacks of Uranium Finance that drained over $50 million.

Two exploits in April 2021 drained Uranium Finance

The core development is a guilty verdict, reached after a six-day trial in New York, for Jonathan Spalletta, a 36-year-old from Rockville, Maryland. According to WTOP News, prosecutors said he attacked Uranium Finance on two separate occasions in April 2021. In the first hack he used a bug to withdraw $1.4 million in cryptocurrency. In the second, he exploited an error to pull $53.3 million from Uranium's liquidity pools. The exchange was forced to shut down due to lack of funds. The jury convicted him on computer fraud and money laundering counts, turning a years-old DeFi exploit into a criminal judgment.

'Crypto is all fake internet money anyway'

What makes the case a niche talking point is not just the amount but the evidence. According to WTOP News, prosecutors presented a message Spalletta sent to another individual saying he "did a crypto heist" and that "Crypto is all fake internet money anyway." Court documents said he spent some of the proceeds on collectible items, including Pokémon and Magic the Gathering cards and sets valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Up to 30 years across two counts

The stakes are substantial. Law enforcement also clawed back a large share of the theft: in February 2025, authorities seized roughly $31 million in cryptocurrency taken from Uranium. The case lands as exchange traffic is climbing — TokenPost reports page views across 12 major exchanges rose 11.41% in September 2026 to about 151 million — keeping security and trust at the center of the conversation.

Conviction lands as exchange traffic climbs

The verdict arrives at a moment when leading platforms are consolidating attention rather than losing it. According to TokenPost, Binance led September 2026 with 34.66 million page views, followed by OKX with 33.23 million and Coinbase with 22.65 million, together accounting for 60.1% of total traffic across the 12 exchanges tracked. OKX traffic rose 29.7% during the month, and Deribit posted the largest increase at 56.6% to 910,000 page views, while crypto.com fell 3.1% and Bitget slipped 0.8%. Against that backdrop, the Spalletta conviction is a reminder that exploits leave a paper trail prosecutors can follow for years.
