Sony unveiled the Crunchyroll Storyworks adaptation division and a PS5 anime hub arriving spring 2027 at its first Anime Future Forum.
Sony Unveils Crunchyroll Storyworks in New York
Sony Pictures Entertainment announced a new division called Crunchyroll Storyworks on Wednesday at the Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum in New York, as reported by Anime News Network and corroborated by Variety. According to both outlets, the division will adapt global stories into anime and Japanese anime into live-action adaptations, working closely with Japanese creators. Sony's Tohru Iokibe is leading Storyworks, and Variety reports he will report directly to Crunchyroll's chief content officer Asa Suehira.
Why the Creator-First Pitch Is Surprising
What makes the reveal notable to anime fans is the framing: rather than a studio grab or a licensing play, Sony is positioning Storyworks as a guardian of Japanese creative vision. Variety reports Ahuja said anime has become a global cultural force and that Sony has a responsibility to protect and amplify what makes it special while keeping creators' visions at the center. Iokibe told Variety that the best adaptations begin with respect for the original work. Anime News Network notes the division will work with Japanese creators specifically, which matters in a market where Western adaptations of anime properties have often drawn fan skepticism over fidelity to the source material.
Feeding the HAYATE Pipeline
The new division has a concrete production role: Anime News Network reports Crunchyroll Storyworks is seeking to provide projects that can be greenlit for HAYATE Inc., the anime production venture Aniplex and Crunchyroll founded in March 2025 and headquartered in Tokyo. Aniplex's Masanori Miyake leads HAYATE as Chairman and CEO with President and COO Leo Watanabe, and its staff is drawn from both companies. HAYATE focuses on planning, developing, and producing anime content for Crunchyroll's streaming platform worldwide, and in April it acquired all shares of anime studio Lay-duce, making the studio a wholly owned subsidiary. Storyworks effectively becomes the idea engine feeding that machine.
A Dedicated PS5 Anime Hub in Spring 2027
Alongside Storyworks, PlayStation president and CEO Hideaki Nishino announced a dedicated Crunchyroll anime hub for the PS5 home screen, launching in spring 2027. Variety and Insider Gaming both cover the reveal, and Yahoo News UK reports the destination is designed to make it easier for the PlayStation community to discover and explore anime content they enjoy. While Crunchyroll has been available as a PS5 app since the console's 2020 launch, this integration makes it part of the home-screen experience itself, letting players find anime and anime-inspired games in one place. Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini framed it as serving fans by meeting them where they already are.
The Stakes: Sony's Cross-Media Anime Bet
Storyworks will bring together Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Japan's creative community, and the Spider-Verse studio Sony Pictures. Fans should also note the commercial backdrop Anime News Network documents: Crunchyroll raised all U.S. subscription prices in February and halted free ad-supported streaming last December, so the company is investing heavily in new projects while narrowing cheaper ways to watch.
What Comes Next for Fans
On the platform side, the PS5 anime hub has no exact launch date beyond spring 2027, per Insider Gaming, which says it will continue monitoring for updates. The hub follows Sony's August debut of Live TV on PS5, a free ad-supported offering of more than 100 channels that Sony Pictures Television plans to expand globally in the coming months, per Yahoo News UK.
