iOS 27 'iPhone Handoff' Lets One Number Run on Two iPhones

A MacRumors forum demo shows iOS 27's iPhone Handoff moving a single phone number between two iPhones via a main eSIM and a companion eSIM.

Apple quietly listed a capability at WWDC 2026 in June that lets users switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number, but gave it little explanation at the time. The feature, called iPhone Handoff, is built into iOS 27, which is expected to be released to the public later this month after roughly three months of beta testing, shortly after Apple's September 9 iPhone event.

The clearest look at iPhone Handoff came from a MacRumors forum member named pdfu, who ran two simulated iPhones through Xcode 27's Device Hub and recorded the setup process. According to GSMArena, the demo shows the phone number automatically switching between the two iPhones based on which device is unlocked and actively being used, with a notification appearing in the Dynamic Island whenever the number moves. The demonstration used virtual devices rather than two retail phones, so real-world behavior could still differ when iOS 27 ships.

Setup lives in the Cellular section of the Settings app, where one iPhone is designated as the main device and the other as the companion. The primary eSIM stays on the main iPhone, while the second device receives what Apple calls a companion eSIM tied to the same number. This is not a full clone of the cellular setup: the main iPhone keeps control of all cellular settings, and location sharing follows whichever handset is actively using the number, so Find My contacts see the device currently carrying the line.

Anyone who carries two iPhones — a personal device and a work phone, or a premium handset alongside a beater for travel or exercise — has long had to swap SIM cards, forward calls, or pay for a second line. Tbreak notes the practical appeal: keep a newer iPhone as the full-time device and use an older one for travel or exercise without losing access to banking apps and work accounts. Both iPhones must run iOS 27 and sit on the same carrier account, and the companion profile has to be issued by the carrier rather than generated by iOS, so carrier support will decide availability. T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are expected to be among the first to support the feature, though Apple has not announced an official list.
