Sony Launches Free 'Live TV on PS5' With 100+ Channels

Sony Pictures Television launched Live TV on PS5 on Aug 31, bringing more than 100 free ad-supported channels to US PlayStation 5 consoles.

What Happened

Sony Pictures Television on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, unveiled "Live TV on PS5," an offering of more than 100 free ad-supported video channels accessible directly from the PlayStation 5 console in the United States. Players reach the service from the Media tab on the PS5 home screen, sign in with a PlayStation Network account, and stream live and on-demand content with no subscription, downloads, or PlayStation Plus membership required. Media Play News reports that Fubo Sports Network is a launch partner, bringing more than 1,200 hours of live sports a year to the platform. Canada is expected to follow, and Sony says it is exploring additional regions.

What Happened

Why It's Surprising

Peter Wood, executive vice president of consumer platforms and services at Sony Pictures Entertainment, told Variety that PlayStation users are gaming and engaging with video but "probably not showing up in other connected TV environments often." Rather than chasing Netflix-style mass subscriber bases, Sony is betting on free ad-supported channels tailored to a specific niche, an emblem of the broader industry shift Variety describes away from heady streaming days toward focused content-to-audience connections.

Why It's Surprising

The Evidence: A Packed Lineup

The channel slate spans nearly every genre, corroborated across multiple outlets. Movies include MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise Free Movies, Sony One Horror Hits and Cinevault, with titles such as "The Hunger Games" and "Resident Evil." TV offerings include "Community," "The Shield," "The Walking Dead," "Hell's Kitchen," "Forensic Files" and "Unsolved Mysteries." IGN notes two exclusive Crunchyroll channels — Black Clover and Box Sets — plus anime favorites like "Naruto," "Sailor Moon," "Hunter x Hunter" and "Death Note." Sports comes via Fox Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now and UFC, while news includes NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from Fox. Creator programming features "Hot Ones," Spotify's The Ringer and the exclusive esports channel eCLUTCH.

The Ad Tech Stakes

The business logic behind the launch centers on advertising reach. Variety reports Sony is working with Publica and PubMatic, two connected-TV advertising specialists, and Wood expects interest will be high if the commercials served are meaningful to PlayStation's users. "This audience appeals to everyone," Wood told Variety, adding that Sony is being "very thoughtful" about keeping ads relevant. The stakes are amplified by scale: Sony has sold more than 95 million PlayStation 5 units worldwide as of June 30, according to data from Sony Interactive Entertainment cited by Variety. TheDesk.net observes that many channels also appear on Xumo Play, the Charter-Comcast joint venture service, though Sony did not say who is powering its FAST distribution.

A Console Becomes a Media Hub

Ubergizmo describes the service as transforming the PS5 into a comprehensive multimedia hub that delivers live broadcasts without additional subscription fees or standalone apps, positioning immediate entertainment options for gaming breaks. Navigation runs through a built-in electronic program guide optimized for the DualSense controller, letting users change channels, scan upcoming schedules and bookmark favorite stations, per Ubergizmo. The service is free with ad breaks funding it, Media Play News notes, and Sony executives have spent years looking for ways to stitch the company's assets together. "I don't think it's rocket science to look at trying to remove the friction of content discovery across different media," Wood told Variety.

What Comes Next

Sony says the package will evolve over time, with new channels, themed programming and live events added as warranted, according to Variety. IGN confirms Sony has promised regularly refreshed programming, new channels and additional content, and that Live TV on PS5 is "completely free" with no paid subscription or hidden fees — at least for now. Beyond Canada, Ubergizmo reports Sony plans to expand the streaming service to international territories in the coming months as regional content licensing agreements are finalized. Sony also plans to bring the experience to its Bravia television lines later this year, per Variety, extending the play well beyond the console. The announcement lands in a busy week for Sony, which has two State of Play presentations scheduled, IGN notes.
