U.S. physical game spending is up 5% in 2026 — its first growth in over a decade — driven by a 631% surge in Switch 2 game-key cards.
Physical Sales Reverse a Decade of Decline
U.S. consumer spending on new physical video games is up 5% year-over-year so far in 2026, reaching $738 million — the first growth in new physical software sales in more than a decade, according to Circana data reported by Kotaku. The increase comes even as total August spending fell 9% year-over-year to $4.3 billion and content spending overall dropped 10% for the month.
Switch 2 and Publishers Explain the Twist
The mechanics of the reversal are unusually specific. Kotaku quotes Circana's Mat Piscatella explaining that only 10 titles were published as game-key cards last year, while 54 more game-key card titles have been published this year — making expanded availability the biggest reason for the surge. Piscatella attributes the growth primarily to Switch 2 and publishers leaning more into game-key cards, noting that Switch 2 owners buy more physical games than other console owners. TwistedVoxel's coverage adds that Switch 2 still led the hardware market in both unit and dollar sales for August and year to date.
A Bitter Market Around One Bright Spot
The broader August numbers give the reversal its sting. Hardware spending dropped 3% year-over-year to $302 million, with 2026 hardware spending through August down 11%, and unit sales fell 15% to 559,000 — the lowest August total since 2013, per TwistedVoxel. Software itself had bright spots: NBA 2K27 was August's best-seller, six new releases made the top 10, and Elden Ring jumped from 41st to seventh on its Switch 2 release — reinforcing how pivotal the Nintendo platform is to the physical market's fortunes.
Whether 'Physical Is Back' Actually Holds
The stakes now hinge on what the game-key card numbers really mean. Kotaku's framing points out the irony that the physical revival is powered by cards that mostly contain download keys rather than the full game, joking that if Sony asks, it's 'totally because physical media is back in.' Either way, the sector has a rare growth story in 2026 — powered by one console, one format, and a 631% jump, as both TwistedVoxel and Kotaku report.
