OperaWire, Boing Boing and Atlanta Black Star report the closed Kennedy Center is moving its Steinway pianos out for sale at heavy discounts.

What happened: the Steinways are being hauled out

Movers have been photographed carrying Steinway pianos out of the Kennedy Center, which is currently closed for a proposed two-year renovation. According to OperaWire, the drama division is selling all of its Steinways, though the house pianos will remain. Atlanta Black Star reports, citing Slippedisc, that the closed Center is moving the Steinways to its Georgetown showroom, where they may be sold. A Steinway employee in Washington, D.C. told AlterNet the pianos are being offered at a heavy discount because the Kennedy Center had 'closed,' and that this is not the routine used-piano sale the shop has held in past years, since the shop's owner intends to retire.

Why it is surprising

For a singing and vocal audience, the Steinway is the working instrument of the recital stage, and a major presenting institution liquidating its pianos while dark is an unusual reversal. Boing Boing frames the sales as renovation that 'has a funny way of looking like liquidation,' coming after the center lost bids to attach Trump's name and was ordered by a court not to tear the building down on a whim. The surprise deepens because the closure was supposed to be temporary: Boing Boing notes U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper found the Kennedy Center cannot close for the two-year renovation the administration decided would begin immediately.

The evidence behind the report

The trail runs from Slippedisc, which first revealed the piano sales, to AlterNet, which confirmed them and spoke with a Steinway employee named Jenny in Washington, D.C., OperaWire reports. She explained the sale would not happen as in past years, because the Kennedy Center had closed, and referred other questions to the Center itself. Boing Boing points to photographs of movers hauling the Steinways out as visible evidence. Atlanta Black Star adds that the building now stands shuttered amid a looming bankruptcy, and that the annual Kennedy Center Honors will leave the venue for the first time, moving to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on December 7.

What the stakes are for performers

Atlanta Black Star reports a broader stripping-out beyond the pianos: a de-accession memo listed disposal of artworks via return to country of origin, transfer, public sale or destruction, and director Richard Grenell told the center's then-first visual arts curator to send donated pieces back. The 24-foot 'Blue' sculpture outside the main building was dismantled without public notice and bought for more than $2 million by former chairman David Rubenstein, per Atlanta Black Star. Protesters rallied the weekend of September 19-20 demanding Trump keep his 'Hands Off the Arts,' while Trump told Time Magazine he is not ruling out demolishing the building: 'I'm not committing to anything. We're going to see how it plays out in court.'

What comes next

OperaWire notes the piano news follows Utah Senator Mike Lee objecting to the Protecting Presidential Memorials Act, a bill co-written with Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski that would have banned demolition of congressional presidential memorials including the Kennedy Center. It remains unclear, OperaWire says, whether pianos and instruments other than the Steinways are being liquidated as well. Atlanta Black Star reports the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors recipients have yet to be announced, with the gala set for December 7 at Capital One Arena, and courts still weighing whether the renaming plan violates federal law. For singers, the open question is where the venue's collaborative pianists and recital partners will land next.
