Prime Video's Fourth Wing has cast Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya, with season 1 filming in Vancouver from April 5 to November 8, 2027.

Violet and Xaden finally have faces

Prime Video has cast the two leads of its Fourth Wing adaptation, with Esther McGregor set to play Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya portraying Xaden Riorson, according to Nexus Point News.

The romantasy drama adapts Rebecca Yarros's bestselling novel, the first installment of The Empyrean series, following Violet through the lethal trials of Basgiath War College as she competes to become a dragon rider for the kingdom of Navarre.

Yarros herself thanked the casting team for 'a thorough, worldwide search' and said it will be exciting to see the actors bring the characters to life on screen.

Fandom fires back within hours

Mashable reports that 'the dragons haven't even taken flight' before fans began breathing fire, with the Fourth Wing subreddit forced to open a second casting megathread after the first surpassed 1,000 comments.

Mashable notes Sakraya was already a popular fancast for the shadow-wielding Xaden, while McGregor's casting as Violet sparked a more contentious debate — some readers questioned whether she fits their vision, while a TikToker argued that 'just picture Esther brunette... she looks like she has bird bones,' referencing Violet's physical fragility.

Mashable also observes that some fans turned to AI to visualize McGregor as Violet, raising questions about how AI-generated art has shaped readers' expectations.

The leads defend the pairing

Both actors responded publicly as the backlash swelled. McGregor posted an Instagram story reading 'So beyond excited.

Honored. Thrilled,' while Sakraya took a pointedly loyal route, posting the beloved line 'My house.

My chair. My woman' — a tease ScreenRant interprets as both a defense of his co-star and a signal of what awaits the fan base.

According to ScreenRant, Yarros also answered a supporter's Instagram comment about the casting backlash by noting that casting decisions on Fourth Wing 'isn't anything I control, so I'm not sure why anyone would be angry with me.'

A filming window emerges from the DGC

ScreenRant reports that season 1 will be filmed in Vancouver, Canada, beginning April 5, 2027 and running until November 8, 2027, with the production listing located through the Directors Guild of Canada under the code name 'Azores.'

That timeline would make a late 2028 release on Prime Video highly likely, per ScreenRant, though no premiere date has been announced by the studio. Nexus Point News adds that the series will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Who is steering the dragon riders

Nexus Point News reports Meredith Averill, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key, is adapting the novels and will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Lisa Joy, co-founder of Kilter Films, directing the pilot and executive producing.

Amazon MGM Studios is producing alongside Kilter Films, Outlier Society and Premeditated Productions, with Yarros executive producing alongside Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society and Jonathan Nolan, Joy and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films.

Sakraya arrives with credits including Netflix's Tribes of Europa and Warrior Nun, Fatih Akin's Rheingold, Those About to Die, and a role as Koza in Netflix's One Piece, per Nexus Point News.

Why this casting matters for romantasy on screen

The stakes are high because Fourth Wing is the romantasy adaptation actually getting off the ground.

CinemaBlend reports that Hulu's Everflame series, based on Penn Cole's The Kindred's Curse Saga, is in active development with Cole deeply involved, while A Court of Thorns and Roses may be 'DOA' despite ACOTAR and Fourth Wing both having flirted with TV announcements.

CinemaBlend argues a huge swathe of readers has invested in these series and would show up for an adaptation — 'it's just taking forever' — which is exactly why the Fourth Wing castings and Everflame script updates feel like forward momentum to devoted readers of the genre.
