Air Canada is dropping five transborder routes in 2027, including its only nonstop to South Carolina, while launching three new U.S. services.

What happened

The cancellations cover Montréal–Seattle, Vancouver–Nashville, Vancouver–Raleigh-Durham, Toronto Pearson–Charleston, and Toronto Billy Bishop–Boston.

The Aviation Hub reports the Billy Bishop–Boston route ends earlier than the rest, on December 1, 2026, while the other four had been planned to return for summer 2027.

Global News notes the Toronto–Charleston service is Air Canada's only direct flight between Canada and South Carolina, and was cancelled indefinitely after already being suspended early this year.

Why the cuts are surprising

The decision is striking because South Carolina is a favourite of Canadian snowbirds, yet it loses its sole nonstop link to Canada.

According to Global News, a University of Toronto School of Cities report found Canadian trips to Myrtle Beach fell more than 65 per cent between 2024/25 and 2025/26 — the steepest decline of any U.S. city.

Global News attributes the broader plunge in Canadian travel to the U.S. to repeated annexation threats from President Donald Trump and tariffs imposed during the trade war, while Air Canada frames the changes as aligning capacity with customer demand.

The evidence in the numbers

Statistics Canada figures cited by Global News and The Aviation Hub show Canadians made roughly 1.89 million return trips from the U.S. in September 2026, up 6.8 per cent year over year, with air trips up 11.6 per cent — but still 18.7 per cent below September 2024 levels.

The Aviation Hub characterizes the recovery as uneven, and reports Air Canada is not alone: WestJet has also announced reductions to its U.S. network, and other Canadian carriers have adjusted schedules amid commercial pressures and higher fuel costs.

Reallocation, not retreat

The Aviation Hub describes the pattern as one of reallocation rather than wholesale withdrawal.

Air Canada plans three new summer 2027 services: Toronto–Louisville starting April 28, Montréal–Indianapolis daily from June 1 through September 30, and Edmonton–Newark four times weekly from June 1 through October 17.

Earlier this year, Global News notes, the airline also cancelled winter service between Montréal and Detroit, Montréal and Minneapolis, and Toronto and Indianapolis, citing demand alignment in each case.

The stakes for travellers

For passengers, the immediate effect is longer journeys. The Aviation Hub reports affected travellers may still reach the cut destinations through connecting flights at other Canadian hubs or on alternative carriers, but losing nonstop options will add travel time.

Those flying Toronto Billy Bishop to Boston face the most urgent change, with the route ending December 1, 2026.

With Canadian travel to the U.S. still well below 2024 levels, the outlet says the airline's capacity decisions will be closely watched through the winter and into next year's summer planning cycle.

What comes next

CTV News reported the changes on October 23, a day after Global News, and both note the route cuts begin in 2027.

Travellers with winter or summer 2027 plans in the affected markets should watch for Air Canada's schedule updates, since the airline has signalled further network reviews as demand patterns shift.
