Nobel week opens Monday with the medicine prize, and GLP-1 research behind Ozempic and Mounjaro is the frontrunner.
What is happening today
The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements begin Monday, October 5, with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. According to India Today, the medicine award is expected at 3:00 pm IST at the earliest, and PBS News says live coverage is expected to begin at 5:15 a.m. EDT in its video player. The announcement sets the tone for a week of prizes: physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday, peace on Friday in Oslo, and economics on October 12.
GLP-1 research is the leading pick
The Economic Times reports that research into hormones that regulate appetite is 'on everybody's lips' for the medicine prize, with Nobel watchers telling AFP that work paving the way for weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro could win. That could include microbiome research, the discovery of the leptin and ghrelin hormones regulating satiety and hunger, and research into glucagon-like peptide 1, or GLP-1, an intestinal hormone signalling satiety that drugs like Ozempic mimic. David Pendlebury, who heads research analysis at Clarivate, said, 'I would put GLP-1 at the top of the list, just because of its enormous worldwide clinical impact.'
Three scientists are regularly named
The Economic Times reports that many scientists have contributed to the field, but three are regularly mentioned for the Nobel: Canadian endocrinologist Daniel Drucker, Danish physician Jens Juul Holst, and Yugoslav-born American chemist Svetlana Mojsov. CBC News adds that Drucker, who won a 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for discovering the GLP-1 hormone used in diabetes and obesity medications, was among the names The Scientist magazine readers suggested and is listed by the prediction market Kalshi as a top contender. A Nobel medicine prize can be shared by up to three people, per India Today.
Why it would be a landmark pick
A GLP-1 award would be a consensus-breaking shift in scale: rather than honouring a single lab discovery, it would recognise research that has reached millions of patients worldwide. The Economic Times notes the enormous clinical impact of Ozempic and Mounjaro, drugs CBC News says have 'changed the lives of millions of people around the world.' Pendlebury's citation-based prediction at Clarivate, reported by The Economic Times, frames this as a likelihood rather than a long shot, and the sheer global attention around the obesity-drug era would make it one of the most publicly visible medicine prizes in years.
The alternative contenders
If the committee goes in another direction, The Economic Times reports several candidates: stem cell research into how skin regenerates and heals wounds, with American cell biologist Elaine Fuchs and her British colleague Fiona Watt seen as leaders; optical coherence tomography, a non-invasive imaging technique creating high-resolution cross-sectional images of biological tissue such as the retina; and Timothy Springer's work on adhesion receptors in the immune system. Breast cancer research and DNA sequencing that helped combat coronavirus could also be honoured, the outlet reports.
What comes next
Whatever the committee decides, the medicine prize is only the opening act of a packed week. India Today notes the 2026 announcement will set the tone for physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics to follow through October 12, with prizes formally presented in December. Per The Economic Times, the peace prize on Friday is drawing the most geopolitical interest, with possibilities suggested including a joint prize to Save the Children and Ukrainian children's rights activist Mykola Kuleba, Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, or the Committee to Protect Journalists. Attention now turns to Stockholm for the first phone call of Nobel week.
