Cardano's ADA surged 10% in 24 hours to over 27 cents, its highest price since May, while bitcoin and ether barely moved in tight ranges.
ADA Breaks Out as Majors Sit Still
Cardano's ADA token is trading decisively positive in a market where the biggest cryptocurrencies are up only slightly and still locked in familiar price ranges. CoinDesk reports ADA gained 10% in the past 24 hours, rising 4% since midnight UTC to trade above 27 cents, its highest level since May. By contrast, bitcoin was up just 1% and ether 0.5%, leaving ADA's outperformance the clearest break from a narrow, range-bound session across digital assets.
Why the Move Stands Out
The surprise is that ADA doubled its larger peers' gains on a day when macro conditions offered little obvious support for crypto risk-taking. Smaller tokens like VVV, ENA and PEPE rose about 5%, per CoinDesk, but market leaders stayed pinned: bitcoin within its recent $84,000-to-$87,000 range and ether around $2,710. A token decoupling from that grid — and hitting a five-month high — is the kind of divergence traders scrutinize for whether altcoin appetite is returning.
Two Candidate Catalysts
The exact catalyst is hard to pin down, but CoinDesk points to momentum around Cardano's RealFi product, announced October 1, which routes stablecoins into institutional credit offering up to 9% annual yields. The network's next major scalability phase, the Dijkstra era, may also be pulling in capital: its initial Phase 1 rollout is due between late December 2026 and early 2027, introducing Linear Leios and nested transactions to boost transaction throughput.
Derivatives Show Longs Holding Firm
Underneath the ADA move, leveraged positioning stayed constructive rather than unwinding. CoinDesk reports bitcoin open interest eased slightly to $22.0 billion from $22.4 billion Friday, with funding rates elevated and broadly 4–10% annualized across venues, while the 3-month basis held in the 5–6% range. Options flow was heavily call-skewed, with a 24-hour put/call ratio of 87/13, and Coinglass data showed $174 million in 24-hour liquidations split 28–72 between longs and shorts.
Supply Picture Favors the Bulls
According to Coinpedia, bitcoin climbed to $86,436.31, up 2.1% over 24 hours and 3.4% over the week, after printing its highest weekly close in more than eight months and rising nearly 50% over three months. Coinpedia also reports long-term holders are sitting on more bitcoin than ever and barely sold through recent volatility, tightening available supply — and that long-term holders got through this downturn without losses for the first time in over a decade.
A Strong Dollar Tests the Rally
The macro backdrop is the main risk to whether ADA's breakout extends. CoinDesk notes the U.S. Dollar Index jumped to 102.53 early Monday, the highest since April 2025, a sustained rise often seen as a headwind for crypto — though TradingView pegged the index slightly lower at 102.17. TradingView also reports markets price just a 20.5% chance of a Fed hike after the October meeting, so this week's ISM services data and FOMC minutes could decide whether altcoin strength survives.
