CNN reports that congressional Republicans had been relieved to see Trump's unpopular tariffs fade from headlines as the midterms approached. The sudden revival of trade fights — particularly with Canada, a major trading partner — caught many in the party off guard, undermining months of messaging aimed at distancing GOP candidates from economic disruption.

According to CNN, more than a dozen Republican lawmakers have criticized the economic moves, including Sen. John Barrasso, who urged policies that make it easier for Wyoming ranchers to feed America, and Sen. Tom Cotton, who called the beef import plan ill-advised. Sen. Susan Collins, locked in a tight race, called new Canada tariffs a mistake and urged returning to a friendly economic relationship.
