GameStop raised used PS5 Pro prices to $1,399–$1,499, above new units, as GTA VI demand and an AI-driven memory shortage dry up new stock.

A used console now costs more than new

A leaked GameStop internal memo shows preowned PS5 Pro consoles repriced to $1,399.99 for Digital models and $1,499.99 for physical editions effective October 6 — intentionally higher than the $899.99 MSRP for brand-new units. Wccftech, which published the memo, reports trade-in values rose to $800–$850, and GameStop's Product Replacement Plan eligibility will be temporarily unavailable after the change. Tom's Hardware reports the leaked prices are already live on the retailer's website and that a GameStop subreddit moderator vetted the employee who shared the memo.

GTA VI rush meets a memory-chip crunch

According to Wccftech, brand-new PS5 Pro units have become extremely rare as casual gamers upgrade ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI's November 19 launch, with the Pro positioned as the best way to play the game — and used units fetching similar prices on eBay. Tom's Hardware adds that Sony, GameStop, and Target are out of stock at $899.99, while Best Buy and Walmart list new units at $1,496.01 and $1,554.99 respectively, and sealed units go for around $1,300 or more on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Tom's Hardware attributes the shortage largely to AI data centers consuming HBM and DRAM capacity, driving a reported 500% RAM price increase over 12 months.

Consoles that only get more expensive

The pricing is historically unusual: consoles traditionally get cheaper over time. Wccftech details how the PS5 Pro launched at $699 in November 2024, rose to $749.99 in August 2025 when Sony raised US prices by $50 citing a challenging economic environment and tariffs, then jumped $150 worldwide in April 2026 to $899 amid component costs, with memory prices reportedly up more than 170% year-over-year. Wccftech also notes Ampere Analysis believes Sony had been relying on fixed-price component deals that have since expired. That means a used Digital unit at GameStop now costs exactly double the console's original launch price.

What buyers can do now

Tom's Hardware reports the base PS5 Digital and Disc Slim editions remain at or close to MSRP for buyers who don't want to overpay, and suggests Xbox Series X as a cheaper-at-MSRP alternative for GTA VI at launch, though Rockstar isn't targeting 60 FPS at launch. Pre-sales began in June 2026, and Tom's Hardware notes retailers are capturing the scarcity premium even on used units.
