Cavan Sullivan scored at 17 years and five days to break the USMNT's youngest-goalscorer record, set just five days earlier by Mathis Albert.

The Goal That Made History

In the 62nd minute of a friendly in Glendale, Arizona, Philadelphia Union's Cavan Sullivan intercepted a poor pass from Mexico goalkeeper José Rangel and lofted a long left-footed strike over the stranded keeper into an empty net, doubling the United States' lead in what became a 3-0 win. At 17 years and five days old, Sullivan became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the U.S. men's national team, breaking a mark that had stood for only five days. "These are the moments you dream of," Sullivan said afterward. "I manifested this moment, not just these past couple of hours when I found out I was starting, but my whole life."

A Record Held for Five Days

The record Sullivan broke belonged to Mathis Albert, who had become the USMNT's youngest scorer at 17 years and 131 days with his goal against Chile the previous Wednesday. The whiplash pace of the record books was not lost on observers: one teenager lowered a mark set by another within the same international window. Sullivan, born September 28, 2009, shaved more than four months off Albert's age at the time of scoring, per AS.

A Teenage Core Powers the Win

Sullivan was not the only teenager to shine. Eighteen-year-old Julian Hall of the New York Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 28th minute, cleaning up a rebound after Gio Reyna's cross was blocked by Rangel. Per US Soccer, Hall became just the third player in USMNT history to score three goals in his first three games, joining Eddie Johnson and Alexander Rae. Malik Tillman completed the scoring in the 84th minute, intercepting a pass in Mexico's defensive half and finishing for his seventh international goal. Mexico's night worsened when Mateo Chávez was shown a red card in the 67th minute for violent conduct after shoving Sebastian Berhalter in the face.

Why the Night Was So Surprising

The 3-0 result was the USMNT's second-largest margin of victory over Mexico, tying marks set in 1995 and the 2023 Nations League semifinal, according to US Soccer. It was also the Americans' first win over a FIFA/Coca-Cola top-10 opponent since November 2021, when they beat ninth-ranked Mexico 2-0. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, who named Tyler Adams captain the day before the match, called Sullivan "a fighter, he's a warrior. It's difficult to find this type of player. Tremendous quality." Goalkeeper Diego Kochen kept a clean sheet in his first international start, and the U.S. scored in the first half for a 10th consecutive match, a program record per US Soccer.

The Manchester City Question Mark

Sullivan's milestone comes with a complicated backdrop. Manchester City secured his signature as a 14-year-old in 2024, and he is set to join the English club next season. But the BBC reports the move is clouded by uncertainty after City were found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial rules they were accused of breaching, and the club is expected to appeal. Per AS, the reported transfer agreement is worth up to $5 million, and Sullivan cannot join City until he turns 18 in September 2027, leaving ample time for the club's still-undetermined sanctions to reshape the move.

What Comes Next

Sullivan is expected to return to Philadelphia Union for the rest of the MLS season while the uncertainty around Manchester City's punishment plays out, Yahoo Sports reports. On the international front, the USMNT will host Canada on Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota, looking to extend its win streak, while Mexico faces Chile in Los Angeles under new coach Rafael Márquez, who suffered his first loss in the rivalry.
