US Confirms On-Orbit Space Control Weapons for First Time

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink confirmed Monday the US has weapons deployed in orbit, its first acknowledgement of offensive space capabilities.
What happened: first-ever acknowledgement
At AFA's Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink declared that the United States "now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action." It is the first time a US official has confirmed weapons deployed in orbit. A Space Force spokesperson said space control employs "kinetic and non-kinetic means to affect adversary capabilities through disruption, degradation and even destruction, if necessary," and that the capabilities can be used offensively or defensively at the direction of combatant commands. Meink declined to say what type of weapons are deployed, how many exist, or when they were placed in orbit.
Why the disclosure is a first
Until a few years ago, no senior Pentagon official would publicly discuss orbital warfare, and the only acknowledged US anti-satellite weapons were ground-based electronic warfare systems. Meink said the phrasing of his announcement was deliberate and designed for deterrence, but argued that detailing the systems would undermine that same deterrence. According to Ars Technica, the Space Force only revealed its first acknowledged weapon system in June, a ground-based mobile satellite jammer called Meadowlands. Last December, President Trump issued an executive order underlining the Space Force's role not only in defending assets but in attack missions, and Space Command chief Gen. Stephen Whiting has called for "credible, acknowledged" options for countering enemy space capabilities.
What kind of weapons might they be?
Meink would not say whether the systems are kinetic or non-kinetic. The Space Force's warfighting framework outlines interests in both, including orbital strike operations and space link interdiction using electromagnetic or cyber attacks. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation told Ars Technica she speculated the weapons could be orbit-based jammers, noting China and Russia are both thought to have space-based jammers. CSIS's Clayton Swope said non-kinetic options such as jammers, spoofers and laser dazzlers are hardware doppelgängers of technology already at scale in orbit, and that US officials have repeatedly preferred counterspace weapons that do not generate debris. A space-based kinetic weapon would leave a cloud of space junk endangering US satellites as well.
The evidence and context
The announcement follows years of US officials highlighting adversary counterspace programs. In 2024 the Biden administration accused Russia of deploying operational anti-satellite weapons, and Rep. Mike Turner revealed an assessment that Russia might put a nuclear weapon in space. CSIS's 2025 Space Threat Assessment warned China operates highly maneuverable satellites that routinely approach US military assets. The BBC reported in February that two Russian satellites likely intercepted communications of at least a dozen European satellites. Meink defended the disclosure by pointing to rivals: "Is there any question in the room about whether or not the Chinese or Russians have been developing these sorts of weapons?"
The stakes: an open arms race in orbit
Ars Technica reports there is now an explicit arms race in orbit, with the United States and China leading in volume and sophistication and Russia the most aggressive in tactics. Experts see risks beyond deterrence. Samson warned that official US acknowledgement opens the door for China and Russia to do the same, which would then be used as justification for the American systems. Swope told Ars Technica the disclosure is too vague to have meaningful deterrent value, since how and when the weapons would be used and their destructive potential remain ambiguous. Analysts also note the stakes for daily life: attacks on satellites could disrupt GPS, communications, and civilian systems critical to the global economy.
What comes next
Neither China nor Russia reacted immediately on Monday, and Washington has not said when the weapons were deployed or under which administration the program began — Ars Technica notes it likely spanned multiple presidencies. Meink paired the announcement with new milestones: the Space-Based Interceptor program under Trump's Golden Dome missile defense has moved from initial contract to flight-ready hardware in under a year, with an initial capability possibly fielded by 2028, and SpaceX is building a $4.2 billion Space-Based AMTI constellation whose first satellites launch this month, per Air & Space Forces Magazine. As Ars Technica concludes, what matters less than who started the orbital arms race is how it ends.
