Shyamalan's 'Remain' Trailer Shows Wren Vanishing

Warner Bros. unveiled the first 'Remain' trailer, showing Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor in a romance that turns eerily supernatural.

Warner Bros. released the first teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's 'Remain' on September 8, 2026, and the footage opens like a romantic comedy. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who meets Phoebe Dynevor's Wren while staying at a historic Cape Cod bed-and-breakfast, and the two bond over board games and meals in scenes set to Mitski's 'My Love Mine All Mine,' according to Deadline and PEOPLE via AOL. Then the tone turns sharply. Wren asks, "Why can't we be together, Tate?" and he whispers, "I think you know." In the moments that follow, Wren appears poised to slam her head against a bathroom wall before vanishing the instant Tate flips on the light, leaving an empty room behind.

Gizmodo's Cheryl Eddy notes the book arrived 18 months before the movie, so the story's big reveal is already in print, and she argues the teaser all but spoils the plot's central "secret." Eddy also writes that the only true mystery left is why the "normally discerning" Gyllenhaal signed on. Sparks, for his part, called collaborating with Shyamalan one of the highlights of his career, in a statement reported by PEOPLE.

Deadline reports that Tate arrives in Cape Cod after a stint in an upscale psychiatric facility, where he was treated for acute depression following the death of his beloved sister — a family member who could see spirits, a trait that runs in the family. He falls for Wren, who has a lot going on beneath the surface, and Tate realizes he must unearth the truth about her past before time runs out to free her from an increasingly desperate fate. The official synopsis describes an alluring young woman who pulls the reclusive architect out of his shell and into the center of a deadly mystery hanging over the small coastal town.

Alongside Gyllenhaal and Dynevor, the film stars Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders, a lineup confirmed by Variety, Deadline and EURweb. Shyamalan produces with Ashwin Rajan through Blinding Edge Pictures, alongside Marc Bienstock and Sparks' producing partner Theresa Park, with Sparks executive producing.

The release plan itself shifted, and outlets disagree on the details. Variety reports the film was originally slated for a Halloween 2026 date before settling on a Valentine's Day premiere. Deadline says it was initially set for Oct. 23, 2026, and now opens in North American theaters February 5, 2027, with an international rollout it dates to Feb. 3. Gizmodo and FirstShowing place the international opening on Feb. 2, 2027, while EURweb also cites Feb. 3 for international audiences. The confusion aside, the consensus across the pack is clear: Warner Bros. will release 'Remain' in North American theaters on Feb. 5, 2027, timed to Valentine's Day dates.

According to Variety, Shyamalan revealed earlier this year that 'Remain' was the highest-testing film of his entire career — a notable claim from a director of 16 features including 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Visit.' His most recent release, 'Trap' in 2024, starred Josh Hartnett as a serial killer caught in a concert lockdown. With 'Trust the Unknown' as the tagline, the box office verdict arrives in February 2027.
