A Manhattan grand jury re-indicted ex-NYPD detective Victor Romero for second-degree murder in the GWB road-rage killing of Koran Irvine.

The Charge Comes Back Up

On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, a Lower Manhattan grand jury indicted retired NYPD detective Victor Romero, 62, on second-degree murder charges in the fatal shooting of driver Koran Irvine on the George Washington Bridge, according to the Manhattan district attorney's office.

Romero appeared in court publicly for the first time Tuesday, then left after a brief appearance, remaining free on $1 million bail.

Why the Reversal Surprised Everyone

The see-saw charges have made this case a true-crime talking point: Romero was initially charged with murder after his arrest, downgraded to manslaughter at arraignment, then re-indicted on murder by a grand jury after what a DA spokesperson called an extensive ongoing investigation since last Thursday's arraignment.

NBC New York reports the DA's office presented the second-degree murder charge to the grand jury, which returned a true bill. Family attorney Keith White called the murder charge an important step toward accountability, but said the family wants bail revoked.

The Alleged Road-Rage Attack

Prosecutors allege the confrontation began around 6:45 p.m. on October 20 when Romero and Irvine, 46, nearly collided while changing lanes entering the bridge's upper level.

According to prosecutors, surveillance video shows Romero aggressively tailgating Irvine's Volkswagen Golf in a black company Range Rover before pulling alongside, firing through the rear passenger window, and driving off toward his Haverstraw home.

Irvine, a veteran Con Edison electrician and father of two, was heading home from work and later died from his injuries. Newsday reports Romero did not call 911 or turn himself in and returned to work the next day before his arrest.

Anger Over Preferential Treatment

Irvine's sister Zeria asked why Romero was not in custody, while his wife Patricia told WABC the surveillance video is 'super clear. It was murder.'

Family lawyer Nicholas Liakas said it was deeply troubling that a retired NYPD detective was downgraded to manslaughter and able to post bail, arguing he received preferential treatment because of his former law-enforcement position.

Romero's NYPD Background

FOX 5 New York reports Romero was an NYPD narcotics detective in Brooklyn until retiring in 2001, after seven years on the job, and was wounded in a June 2000 off-duty shootout during a robbery at his family's laundromat, when he shot both suspects with his service weapon.

His defense attorney described him in court as a 'hero police officer' with a 'sterling record.' Newsday reports two handguns were recovered from his home during a search after his arrest.

The attorney's characterization stands in stark contrast to the image prosecutors paint of an aggressive pursuit and deadly gunfire.

What Comes Next

Romero is due back in court November 23 for arraignment on the upgraded second-degree murder charge, and prosecutors said his bail status did not immediately change, per Gothamist. His attorney did not comment on pending litigation.

The Irvine family is pushing for remand, with Keith White saying they expect and hope there will be a change in bail conditions.

The case has drawn national attention to how a former detective is prosecuted compared with other defendants, and the family says it will keep pressing until the charges match the evidence shown in the surveillance footage.
