Dr. Dre Says Embrace AI, Not Fear It

Dr. Dre calls AI a creative tool, not a threat, urging musicians to adopt rather than resist it.

According to Digital Trends, Dr. Dre revealed in an interview with The New York Times that he is already experimenting with AI while producing music, and he wants other artists to embrace the technology rather than resist it. Speaking alongside longtime collaborator Jimmy Iovine, Dre said, "I don't see it as a threat," arguing that people who struggle with creating are more likely to feel threatened by AI. Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for musicians, the legendary producer sees it as another creative tool that artists should learn to use.

The stance breaks sharply from the prevailing mood in the music industry. Digital Trends reports that streaming platforms and social media are being flooded with what many call "AI slop" — songs churned out with minimal effort using generative tools. For musicians, that has raised uncomfortable questions about where the industry is heading. Dr.

According to Digital Trends, Dr. Dre compared the anxiety surrounding AI to the arrival of drum machines and synthesizers — technologies that once challenged traditional ideas about how music should be made but did not replace musicians. Instead, artists learned to use them, and they eventually became an enormous part of modern music production. Dre believes AI could follow a similar path. He is already using the technology in the studio, although not to have a chatbot generate his next album. Rather, he uses AI to experiment with work he has already created and see what the technology can do with it.

The AI conversation is not confined to music. According to Media Selangor, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while officiating Menara FINAS in Damansara Damai, said the national film industry must be more open to new technology, including animation, IT, and AI, to ensure it grows and remains competitive. Anwar said too many constraints could block the film industry from growing, and that the government wants to provide more open discussion platforms so arts industry players do not feel pressured or restricted. The parallel suggests that across entertainment sectors, leaders are weighing how to integrate AI rather than reject it outright.

The entertainment industry is simultaneously undergoing rapid economic and technological transformation. According to Westfair Communications, Yonkers, New York's fast-growing film production industry has generated approximately $46 million in sales and nearly $12 million in earnings, with 124 production days across the city. Great Point Studios operates eight sound stages with plans to expand to 15–20 stages. This economic expansion is occurring alongside the broader industry's reckoning with AI's role in creative work — a conversation Dr. Dre is now advancing.

According to Digital Trends, Jimmy Iovine shares Dre's enthusiasm, believing talented musicians could make even better records when given access to AI, and he is not particularly worried that the technology will also produce plenty of bad music — pointing out that bad music existed long before generative AI. Iovine named Timbaland as another producer embracing AI and suggested that many musicians are already experimenting with it behind closed doors, even if they do not want to admit it. For Dre, the path forward is clear: talented artists should figure out what they can make with AI rather than leave the technology entirely to the machines.
