HBO ordered an eight-episode Crazy Rich Asians series, reuniting Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh in their roles.

The Sequel Is Finally Here — as a TV Series

HBO and Warner Bros. Television have greenlit a one-hour original drama series version of Crazy Rich Asians, announced October 8, 2026. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will return as series regulars, reprising their roles from the hit 2018 film, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh recurring as Eleanor Young. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the movie, will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon M. Chu, Kevin Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson also producing. "This series is the sequel we've been waiting for," Lim said, noting the writers' room is already "humming."

Why the Long Wait for More Crazy Rich Asians

Fans have asked Jon M. Chu "almost every day for eight years" when a sequel was coming, and the feature follow-up never materialized. Chu marked the moment in characteristically blunt fashion, telling Variety, "bok bok bitch, we're back." The film grossed over $239 million worldwide on a reported $30 million budget and holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes critical score.

Eight Episodes of Breathing Room

The series will run eight hour-long episodes picking up after the events of the 2018 film, which ended with Rachel Chu and Nick Young celebrating their engagement with Eleanor's approval. Kwan called the "breathing room of an HBO series" a dream come true for bringing his stories to life.

Who Isn't Confirmed Yet

The larger film ensemble — Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, Lisa Lu, Nico Santos and Harry Shum Jr. among them — has not been announced for the series. Consequence notes that HBO's press release does not mention the Astrid and Charlie storyline set up by the first film, and speculates that Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr.'s deals could still be in motion, the roles could be recast, or the series may simply focus on the newly engaged Rachel and Nick. TVLine suggests any of the film's supporting players could surface as guest stars later.

The Stakes for a History-Making Franchise

TheWrap reports the film was the first modern Hollywood story with an all-Asian cast in 23 years, and that audiences celebrated it with the #GoldOpen theater buyout movement — AOL, citing USA TODAY, describes it as the first major studio film starring Asians and Asian Americans in theaters in 25 years. It became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s. Warner Bros. Television's Channing Dungey called the property one of the most beloved stories in popular culture, and HBO's Casey Bloys called the four returning stars global superstars.

What Comes Next

According to TheWrap, production on the series is set to begin in 2027, following the announcement days after Skydance officially closed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The project is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers including Chloe Dan and Jeannine Tang for SK Global Entertainment, Naia Cucukov Richards via Lim's 100 Tigers, and Rose Lam. Fans will have to wait — as Kwan put it, "it will be worth the wait" — for a series that finally answers the question Chu has fielded for eight years.
