TV Insider reports a Wheel of Fortune contestant stunned Ryan Seacrest by solving a barely-guessable Bonus Round puzzle for a $138,479 payday.
The Puzzle That Had Almost Nothing on the Board
On the November 5 episode of Wheel of Fortune, a contestant named Luke delivered the kind of Bonus Round solve that fans replay the next morning.
According to TV Insider, Luke picked the "Person" category and was shown the puzzle _ _ S _ _ _ _ _, then chose the letters M, D, P and O, which brought the board to just _ _ S _ _ O D _. After a few seconds of visible doubt, he blurted out the answer: "BUSYBODY."
Host Ryan Seacrest was stunned, clapping Luke on the back and asking, "How did you get there?!" When Seacrest revealed the $100,000 prize, both men erupted.
A Runaway Win Built on the Express Wedge
TV Insider's episode recap shows Luke dominated long before the Bonus Round.
He solved the "Famous Duo" puzzle "Buzz Lightyear and Woody" for $6,350, then took the Express Wedge in the Prize Puzzle and rode it to $17,300 plus a trip to Germany, Austria and Hungary worth $7,099 by solving "Stranger things have happened."
He added the Triple Toss-Up money, survived hitting Bankrupt late, and closed with the final puzzle "ringing endorsement." His competitors, Ashley and Krista, finished with $7,600 and $2,000 respectively, making Luke's $38,749 pre-Bonus total a runaway.
The bonus prize then nearly quadrupled his night in one solve.
A Week of Stunned Seacrest Reactions
Luke's big win lands in a stretch of headline-grabbing Bonus Round drama. Yahoo reports that earlier in the week, New Jersey contestant Matt Malagiere failed to solve "Auto Body Shop" and lost out on a $113,000 envelope, walking away with $13,300 instead as Seacrest offered a hug.
And E! News reports that on the November 3 episode, Seacrest comforted Shawn Broderick after he missed a $50,000 prize, telling him "We had a great night" as Broderick settled for $23,650 including a $7,200 trip to Vietnam.
Seacrest and White Keep the Bonds Warm
The E! News account also captures the softer side of Seacrest's third year hosting, including his willingness to play wingman for the single Broderick after he won the Vietnam vacation — "Anybody, please apply," the contestant quipped.
Broderick admitted he was more starstruck by Vanna White than by Seacrest himself, and E! News notes White told them last year that she and Seacrest "get along great" and that she's relieved she didn't retire alongside Pat Sajak in 2024.
"I'm just not ready to retire yet. I'm having fun," she said, according to E! News.
Moments like Luke's solve are the kind of viral sparks that keep the syndicated institution, which E! News says draws more than 20 million weekly viewers, culturally alive.
What Comes Next for the Show's Hottest Stretch
Wheel of Fortune airs weekdays with Seacrest and White, streams next day on Hulu and Peacock, and is riding a run of Bonus Round storylines that each outlet in this pack found worth covering within days of each other.
TV Insider's recap of Luke's $138,479 night, Yahoo's account of Malagiere's $113,000 miss and E! News' story on Broderick's $50,000 loss sketch a week where the final envelope decided everything — in one direction or another.
For viewers, the takeaway is the same tension Seacrest voiced: with very few letters on the board, one confident solve can shock the host, the contestant and the audience all at once.
