NBC led 2026 midterm election-night primetime, its first federal election win since 2012, while Fox News slumped.

NBC Takes a Primetime It Hasn't Held in 14 Years

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nielsen fast national ratings put NBC on top of 2026 midterm election night primetime with 6.8 million viewers, a big change from the 2022 midterms, when NBC finished fourth among the six most-watched news outlets.

If the preliminary numbers hold, the outlet reports, NBC will be the first broadcast network to lead a federal election night in total viewers since the 2012 presidential election — which NBC also topped.

The Guardian reported slightly lower preliminary figures, with NBC averaging 6.519 million viewers between 8 and 11 p.m., and attributed each outlet's tally to its own reporting.

Why the Reversal Is So Surprising

The surprise is the scale of the realignment. The Hollywood Reporter notes NBC's dominance was wide enough that it should survive further ratings adjustments, and that the win broke the cable news networks' usual grip on election nights.

Fox News, which often leads viewership on election night, according to The Guardian, instead trailed both broadcast networks and fellow cable channels CNN and MS Now, beating only CBS.

Salon's culture critic Melanie McFarland framed the night as a sea change in tone as well, with outlets like CNN and MS NOW embracing optimism after years as what she calls battered underdogs.

The Evidence: Tightly Bunched Cable, Streaming Records

The Hollywood Reporter reports ABC finished second with 5.12 million viewers, while the three big cable news channels were within 120,000 viewers of one another: CNN at 4.159 million, MS NOW at 4.156 million and Fox News at 4.04 million, with CBS far back at 2.73 million.

NBC also led the adults 25-54 demographic with 2.93 million.

The outlet adds that NBC's 'Kornacki Cam,' focused solely on Steve Kornacki, was election night's most-watched live stream, generating 29 million views across platforms, including 6.1 million on YouTube, peaking around 300,000 concurrent streams between 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. ET.

A Big Night for the Battered Underdogs

CNN's Van Jones delivered what Salon calls the night's most satisfying monologue, telling chastened GOP pundit Scott Jennings, 'This is Jonestown for the Republican Party,' while John King worked the Magic Wall wondering whether the night was 'a rebuke' or 'a shellacking.'

On MS NOW, Salon says Rachel Maddow celebrated before results arrived, Ali Velshi ran the Big Board after Steve Kornacki moved to NBC, and Symone Sanders-Townsend teared up explaining what Keisha Lance Bottoms' Georgia win meant to Black women.

The Hollywood Reporter adds Jimmy Kimmel had traditional late night to himself with NBC and CBS preempting programming.

The Stakes: Fox's Slump and a Fragile Cable Future

The Guardian reports Fox News' election-night audience collapse continues a recent slide, noting the network's October viewership was down 27% year over year in total day viewers, and that Fox Corp chief executive Lachlan Murdoch acknowledged 'viewer fatigue' on an earnings call Monday.

The outlet also reports Trump blamed Fox News for his party's losses on Truth Social.

Salon notes the institutional stakes beyond one night: CNN faces new ownership by Skydance and its Trump-allied owner David Ellison, while MS NOW now belongs to Versant, spun off from NBCUniversal, making the cable news order more unsettled than the ratings alone suggest.

What Comes Next

The Hollywood Reporter cautions that fast nationals exclude Nielsen's big data component, so numbers will change, and the cable networks are bunched so tightly that their order could easily shuffle before finals.

The Guardian reports figures are likely to be revised upward when final audience data is released Thursday.

On the historical scoreboard, The Hollywood Reporter says the six-network combined total of 27.05 million viewers already beats the final 12-network 2022 total of 25.43 million, but the century-best 2018 midterm total of 36.11 million across 11 outlets is probably out of reach, meaning the surge — while real — falls short of a record night.
