Meta Launches Camera-Free Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses

Meta's new $349 Ray-Ban Meta Audio drops the camera entirely, answering privacy backlash as Samsung prepares its first rival smart glasses.

At Meta Connect 2026, Meta expanded its smart glasses lineup to four new products: the $249 Meta Adventurer, the $349 Ray-Ban Meta Audio, the $449 Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3), and an updated Ray-Ban Display. The Ray-Ban Meta Audio is the surprise of the batch — Meta's first audio-only smart glasses, built with open-ear speakers, six microphones and Meta AI, but no camera at all. Meta says they deliver up to 12 hours of mixed-use battery life. The move means Samsung, which is confirmed to launch its first smart glasses later this year, will now face a rival already spread across every price tier.

According to Bandwidth Blog, the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio weighs 43 grams — noticeably lighter than camera-equipped models like the 49.2-gram Optics or the 69-gram Ray-Ban Display. The frames offer adjustable temple tips, customizable nose pads and spring-loaded overextension hinges, and Bandwidth Blog reports up to 12 hours of continuous playback plus 48 extra hours from the companion charging case. They come in rectangular 'Burbank' and retro 'Clubmaster' shapes across 23 color and lens combinations with prescription support. Pre-orders opened at $349, with retail shipments scheduled for October 13.

The pivot is striking because the camera has been the defining feature of Meta's glasses. Bandwidth Blog frames the Audio model as a direct answer to public privacy concerns about discreet video recording, catering to wearers who want a conventional look. Android Police goes further, arguing the product is a business-driven response to the camera backlash rather than a consumer play — noting that Meta's own page leads with 'built without a camera' and that audio-only frames echo the discontinued Bose Frames, a category earbuds largely killed. The Gen 3, notably, made its camera lens smaller and less obvious in the temple.

shattered.io reports the Meta Adventurer is Meta's cheapest AI glasses ever at $249, with pre-orders from September 23 and shipping October 23; SammyGuru says it carries a 12MP camera, up to 3K video and about eight hours of mixed use. The Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) jumps to $449 in 27 combinations, and shattered.io attributes to Engadget's hands-on a nine-hour battery, a six-mic array cutting over 90% of background noise, and 3K video recording. Above them sit the $799 Ray-Ban Meta Display with a 600 x 600 color screen for notifications, navigation and translated text.

Meta is not cutting prices from weakness. shattered.io reports that Meta and EssilorLuxottica sold more than 7 million Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta units in 2025, over triple the prior two years combined, and that global AI glasses shipments surged 263% in the first half of 2026. shattered.io also cites IDC putting Meta at 69.2% of the broad smart-glasses category in Q1 2026 and Counterpoint at 94% of display-free AI glasses. Samsung's first glasses, built with Google, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, will bring a camera, microphones, speakers and Gemini-powered AI into this entrenched market.

Shipments begin with the Ray-Ban Meta Audio on October 13 and the Adventurer on October 23, giving Meta a full price ladder — from $249 camera models to a $579 limited 90th-anniversary Aviator — before Samsung's debut. Samsung's counter will lean on the Galaxy ecosystem and Gemini integration, and the answer arrives when its glasses officially launch later this year.
