Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno will direct Cosmoship Yamato √2199, the first Production I.G–Studio Khara film, release date TBD.

A New Yamato Takes Flight

According to AUTOMATON, Production I.G and Studio Khara have officially announced Cosmoship Yamato √2199, a new feature-length anime film in the Space Battleship Yamato series. The Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno serves as director, planner and executive producer, while acclaimed mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi joins as co-director. Alongside the announcement came an official website, an X account, and teaser artwork showing Yamato's silhouette preparing to launch into space against a devastated landscape. The film is currently in production, with its release date yet to be determined.

A Historic First Pairing of Studios

The studio behind Evangelion-related works joining forces with a veteran of the Yamato legacy is a combination fans have never seen on this series before. Citing Oricon, AUTOMATON adds that work on the project began in 2024, when Anno briefly announced he was involved in a new title in the Space Battleship Yamato series.

Why Anno Says It Matters

What makes the announcement resonant is Anno's own framing. AUTOMATON notes that Anno has loved the series since his school days, and quotes him saying: "We're not just making this to fulfill our childhood dreams, we want to create a Yamato that embodies our prayers and wishes for both the next generation and our own. That's the spirit in which we're producing this film." AUTOMATON also reports the film is set to take a different direction from previous remake titles, with most details still under wraps — leaving fans guessing at what a non-remake Yamato looks like.

Meanwhile, Beerus Locks Its Date

As Yamato fans speculate, Siliconera reports that the Dragon Ball Super: Beerus anime adaptation has pinned down its release: October 11, 2026, streaming worldwide on Crunchyroll with English subtitles available day one. Siliconera details a Toei Animation ad campaign with trucks in Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo and Tokyo from October 5–11, buses in Los Angeles and New York, and ads at 30 US malls. Masako Nozawa voices Goku and Koichi Yamadera voices Beerus; no English dub has been announced yet. Together, the two stories mark a busy hour for classic-franchise anime revival news.
